I wanted to give you a heads-up. The rules say: This is a free verse poetry contest. Any poem about any subject verse or specific syllable count isn't needed.
However, free verse poems cannot have an established rhyme scheme as this one does. You still may have time to fix it.

Thanks much.

Dear Author, Thank you for bringing back memories like this for me! I wasn't watching for Indian attack's, and my tree wasn't an Oak, but the sentiments about 'going back' had tears flowing out of these elderly eyes.
Poetry can say things that regular words cannot. Is it because of the rhymes or the flow of metered words that make the difference. Have you ever tried to figure it out?

Thank you Suzanna. I'm 82 and as I get older I think of my young years much more. They were poor years, but good years. I agree,
poetry is much more expressive than free verse

Hey! we are the same age! Do you write Prose on FanStory too?

Beautiful, heartwarming poem about a precious childhood memory and a place with a history that goes back in the family for generations. Even though it's free verse, I like the rhymes. I can picture the majestic oak tree and the young boy climbing it, looking out for marauding Indians. Just precious!

Thank you Mary for the very nice comments. It will probably be rejected, but that doesn't matter. I write for the reviews I receive
not the contest. Thank you, for the stars.

You're very welcome. I don't think not winning a contest means a work is rejected - I've entered several contests already, and I just figure there's a lot of competition. You really have a beautiful poem there. It wouldn't hurt to win sometime, but we keep going anyway! I'm glad you do too.
