It's so scary of how the fire spread and how hard it is to put it out. All the houses, animals, people who've lost everything, the firefighters, etc. So much damage.

The fires in Australia are a tragedy becoming a full-blown apocalypse. I suspect it's not even possible for the papers to print the true nature of what is happening.

Your poem was filled with the passion of the moment.

Well done.

Hello, I think you have a nice style in your writing here. It rhymes and the flow is smooth, etc., but the sentiment is not one I share, as I don't like playing the 'blame', 'shame', 'claim' game that is so prevalent in Western societies today. And I don't share you ideas on climate change. I believe that with so few records kept for such a short time, it is a bit scientifically dodgy to be so bold for me. Before the colonization of Australia by the British, the fires would have come along every summer and burnt until they reached either a weir, river, lake or the sea. Our native flora also suggest we were forged from fire because of the seed pods that need extreme heat to open. And we know the earth has frozen and cooled and heated before. Where I live it has been a mild summer and we have had rain, my garden is alive and I'm very thankful for that, lol. And wildlife and stock are always victims, it is just the way of it, but as a girl brought up on a sheep station, a Collins Street farmer's daughter, I understand how tragic this must feel.

I am just glad that so few lives were lost this year compared to others.

Nice to meet you at FS and thanks for sharing your writing, Eve.

I appreciate the nice comments about style.

There are certain conspiracy theories which, while being annoying and stupid are nonetheless for the most part harmless. Flat-Earth, Area 51 and the moon landing "hoax" are such theories. What all of them have in common is that people who have no clue about science think they know better than those who have spent years or decades studying and becoming experts in their field. This actually has a name in psychology, it's called the Dunning Kruger effect.

Climate change denial is an example of this, but in term of its potential for harm, in a completely different category. The PM, like so many before him, has ignored, not for months or years, but decades, what every single scientific organisation with any credibility, and 99% of the scientists who are not employed by the fossil fuel industry has been telling him. Climate change is real, and it's exacerbated by human actions. Mathematical models confirm that. Experimental observation confirms that.

When a billion lives have been lost and people are dying because they can't breathe the air, which in parts of this country is 10 times "extreme" level, then it's too late for those who have buried their heads in the sand to glibly say they "don't want to play the blame game". What they don't want to do is acknowledge two concepts honest people take for granted, and politicians rarely do -- responsibility and accountability. But the majority of the public is now prepared to hold them accountable, as they rightly should.

buring head, glibly, taking for granted, accountability...I hope you have a nice clean back yard, lol rightly should, your accusations and predictions go on and on...their are scientists that could argue it far better than me, so I won't even try. Have a great day breathing in all that bad air, ahahaha
reply by the author on 19-Jan-2020
My "back yard" is dirt, thanks to the fact that all the grass has died off in the heat. And there is no scientist who would argue what you propose, unless of course, the fossil fuel industry is signing their paycheck. Glad you find the bad air funny ;-)

My dad is a particle physicist and works in Israel, and he would definitely argue with you, but they are more interested/concerned with fossil fuel emissions, and not the weather, which they don't think is the villain, sorry to disappoint, but he is someone I would believe in this field as he is so highly valued and knows what he's talking about, and he's not alone. I think the news outlets are the big winners, and social media which are so good at spreading wrong information and hyping everything up.

Next time your uncle's at CERN, tell him to say hi to my cousin, Brian Cox. He can probably find him cycling around the LHC.

You are so incredibly cynical, I do pity you. The trouble today with very divisive areas like climate change, is once upon a time, scientists and men that were experts in their field gathered data, examined data, produced hypothesis, wrote papers and thesis and then their findings were digested and regurgitated to be more simply digested by reporters who were after the news of the truth. Today, with social media and the corruption of the press, everyone can have an opinion just like you. I don't know what you do for a living, but are you a geophysicist, or a tectonic plate expert, a scientist, meteorologist, or like my father who works in Israel, not for CERN, a particle physicist? Because every joe blow can have an uninformed opinion now, just like you. And when the suit doesn't fit their taste, they behave just like you, nasty, cynical and ill informeSorry, but you are way out of the ball park, but go about your day nicely and please and leave me be. I will stick to the people I know that are experts, because they rub shoulders with other experts, and while I'm not one, I do have ears at the dinner table. End of story. And you are a typical nonj-expert in the age of social media and disinformation, so excuse my cynicism, but you do not know what you are talking about, bye, and please leave it alone now, I am not interested in furthering a conversation with such a know all, who really methinks, knows precious little.

I will not reply anymore on this subject, and people like you are so very tedious...

WEll Craig you knew I'd be backing you in this. I hope you are relatively if not completely safe. You are too right that this needed to be voiced. We're in trouble mate, big big trouble and no one seems to give a french fried f***! I love how strong this one is. I love how it flows and rolls so smooth and I hear your truth in the words. Good luck! xoxo Kiwi

Thanks, Deborah, for the wonderful comments and the lovely shiny stars. Well, must run. I'm hatching a plot to exchange ScoMo for Jacinda Ardern while no one is looking. I'm pretty sure I can pull it off with no one noticing :)

In my opinion, a strongly vivid write, intended to shame and rouse one leading a forum who have not answered the call of consciousness and resolution in the critical condition of the times and environment in Australia, a lesson in platitudes by us all regarding the plight of our plane - smooth in both verse and striking presentation, in its entirety...

This one is well written and we have a leader (I use the term loosely) in the USA who also finds it convenient to ignore the threat of global warming. Kudos to those who stand up to them.

I can't say that I know much about your situation, but, it sounds like more politics as usual. We're accustomed to this in our neck of the woods. Greed and destruction of the natural resources for profit no matter who you have to trample on and destroy to get it. Thanks for sharing this informative and well written work. I pray that things will turn around for the better for you all. Bless you and well done.

Your rhyming scheme is beautiful and your observations come through so clearly. I'm not familiar with the politics of Australia, but I think this situation exists in many countries. Well done.

Hello CD, this is an excellent poem in the form of a letter to your Prime Minister. I particularly like -

I thought devout folk deemed it hip
to ponder on their stewardship
o'er life and this old world on which it's found.
So why not ditch the greed and pride?
It's not too late to stand beside
all those who treat the Earth as hallowed ground.

Very good, but if you sent this would it make any difference? Greed is what motivates people in power. It is a frightening situation that Australia is in - and heart-breaking when you think of the loss of both habitat and the poor animals that have died. It's on a biblical scale - is there signs of an end. Not according to the news here.
Well done - regards Dorothy x

I'm pretty sure if I sent it, a staffer would bin it long before it got anywhere near the PM. We had widespread rain on Friday and the temperatures have cooled off considerably over the weekend, giving a bit of respite. As a result, we are down to "only" 69 fires still burning in my state, 20 of them declared "out of control". A couple of hot days, and we'll be back where we were.

Thanks for the thoughtful comments and the delightful rating, Dorothy. Much appreciated, Craig

I'm not sure that we can put all the blame on ScoMo for the bushfires, but we do need to sit down and work out WHY Personally I don't think anyone has all the answers. Well written Craig, with passion and it comes through. I hope you and yours haven't been in the fire range.

There are many people to blame, Valda. Chiefly, those who have ignored and opposed all the experts who have been warning about this for years. But ultimately, only one sets Australia's climate policy and represents us in the world forum. Thanks for the kind comments. We have been lucky to have had no serious fires in our immediate area, although, like much of Australia, we are suffering the effects of the smoke and the heat. All the best, hope you are out of harm's way. Craig
