Thank you for your family's sacrifice and your husband's service. You vividly captured the moment of his return, amplified by the fact that you greeted him with a new baby. I appreciate your conveying the emotions in this rhymed sonnet. Sighs- Joan

I am glad you had precious experiences as a child and that this wartime challenge made your relationship with your husband stronger. Smiles- Joan
Comment from Father Flaps
Hi Melissa, it must be difficult to watch loved ones go, deployed in foreign lands they'd never otherwise see. Heat, dust and danger. And you have to just sit and wait for them to come back home. We don't have to deal with that in Canada. We aren't forced into the army or navy or air force. And I know there are some who want to go, policing for peace. They do their duty. But it doesn't make it any easier on those left behind.
I enjoyed your poem, reminded of those who risk their lives for us.
I like these lines the best,
"Each moment seemed to creep on sloth-like feet"
and,
"seemed to be devouring my face"
Cheers

Thank you Melissa. I happy your husband came home safely. My brother was over there also, got out and went back in because of 9-11. War is good only for the undertaker and the oil rich tycoons. Hope you and your husband are doing good and feeling fine this new year. This is a good sonnet. Thank you for sharing.

Oh, how hard those years must have been for you! You described it well - the anticipation, the waiting and the heat of the day while waiting for the reunion. And your son is also serving. Thanks to your dedicated family for serving our country!

Comment from Gloria ....
You really write up a nice sonnet, Melissa, and this one is no exception. The tone and mixed emotions of excitement and relief are well illustrated in fine metre and rhyme.
A real pleasure to read and review. :)

Thank you Gloria. It was hard to have him gone on deployment. Now, our oldest son is an Army officer and we are keeping an eye out on Iran!! Ugh! I really appreciate your comments and stars!!

How beautiful, I got shivers reading this. I am so glad he came home to you and your family. What do you think of the new troops going to the middle east, 3000? This must be on your husband's mind. We live in Canada and hope and pray things won't escalate. Thank you for sharing this, Happy New Year, Laura.

Hello Laura... thanks so much for your lovely review of my sonnet. Hubby has retired from the Army, but our son is active duty and we always wonder how world events will effect him. Thank you for your lovely thoughts and review!!!

This is a heartwarming poem. I am so glad he is back safely. War is
so hard on everyone. I wish there was peace in the world. But it almost seems hopeless.

Hello Melissa!
I don't know how I nearly missed your exceptionally well-crafted sonnet!
Too many antibiotics, I suspect!
Your sonnet is heartfelt and moving.
I can only attempt to imagine the emotions that you were experiencing as you and your husband were reunited...
If I may make two minor suggestions for the following two lines:
I kissed our nine month old, (nine-month-old,) our first-born son; (,) (no need for a semi-colon as what follows is not an independent clause
and gladly spurned dark thoughts of war and death.
Thank you for sharing!
