You've told a great tale of overcoming that gambling addiction. I loved the way you wrote,
One day, he drew the winning card
and turned it up to see
his dear one's face. Nice Ballad Yvonne, enjoyed it,
cheers,
valda

This poem, Queen of His Heart, has a straight-forward meter that tells the story of the widower who caved to the worldly vices he had vowed to avoid. Redemption and change can find even the most lost.

Comment from Gloria ....
This is really a gripping poem, Yvonne. Drinking and gambling well any addiction that furnishes immediate highs and lows, no pun intended, are very hard to beat.
Excellent ballad and the warning is one for all to heed.
Thank you for sharing and Happy Thanksgiving to you. :)

Thank you, Gloria. Happy Thanksgiving to you. You don't celebrate the day in Canada, do you?

We celebrated Thanksgiving Day on October 13th this year. Have a slice of pumpkin pie for me. It's my favourite. Yum.

Will do!

OH wow and excellent ballad and one that turned out good instead of sad or tragic. Great rhyme and meter and flowed in an excellent story line and content

Hi Yvonne, Your poem is such a pleasure to read. I wish I could write you a proper review, but, alas, I don't anything about meters. Pour excuse you may think, but that's how it is. I love reading poetry, though. All best. Ulla:)))

Hi Yvonne this is just great. Your lines read smoothly with excellent rhymes. I love your story, all of it, the beginning, the middle, and the end. Great presentation with the picture of the cards. He forgot but love wins out in the end. Well done. Nancy:)

Yesterday I read one of Dolly's poems about Jacob Marley's face appearing on Scrooge's door knocker, and today this woman's face appears on the winning card. It's enough to make anyone sign the pledge.
This is a very good example of the ballad form and put to good use to.

Thank you. I took this from an old Jimmy Rodgers song back in the 1930s about his mother.

Dear Damommy,
Nice story, well scripted in sound rhyme and metre. Only thing that jarred (and only a little) was the repeat of "head" in line 1, stanza 2, so soon after its use in the previous line.
Regards
Reg

Your moving poem is excellently-written in ballad stanza. Your story is well-told and conveys a powerful message about promises not kept--then eventually kept.
