I like how you took that simple conversation about an incorrect perception and made it into a poem that makes us reflect upon our own sense of who we are. Dementia takes away from our ability to see ourselves as we used and how we are perceived by others.

A well written poem about a mother with dementia and it not being easy to accept. It might seem like she is suffering because of sins from long ago. I don't think it's because of sins. It's because of a physical problem that has made her world out of sync. I understand feeling sad, but from your poem, I feel how deep your feelings are about your mom. I'm rambling, but I'm a nurse and we nurses always have to make something out of nothing or we're not happy. LOL I like your poem. You're dealing with something that many adult children have to deal with.
God bless!

Victor, such a sad thing to witness as our parents fall into these years. Dementia has taken a few of my relatives on both my parent's side. Mother does crosswords, and word searches daily to keep her mind sharp. Dad on the other hand simply watches t.v. all day.
God bless

Thank you for reading and understanding, Steve. This problem seems to affect almost every family in some way. Doug

Inner sight is a marvellous thing, it's usually affected by a whole plethora of emotional and perceived information, and is very affected by bias, emotion that we don't even recognise or can process, my mother moved in a very narrow sphere, As did my dad, but I loved them anyway, well done, thanks for sharing, blessings, Roy

Roy, please don't take this wrong. I...mean it. I don't believe I have ever come across a true, sort of, completely convinced traditional Christian that...well, uh, displayed such an open, highly intelligent mind, or/and reflected seriously on what us basic pagans had to say. I am actually getting more and more impressed with you. But...PS...please stop the hate mail.K? LOL
-
I certainly don't hate what you write, or you Doug, I struggle with interpreting what you write, but I like to be adventurous with perception. Roy
-
Thank you, Roy. U do know the hate mail thing was a joke, right? Smiling. Doug

This is an excellent example of the ravages of this disease. My mother had this before she passed on. It was truly sad an discouraging. I'm sorry my friend for you having to see your mother slip from reality like this. Thanks for sharing this personal and well written work. Well done!

Yes, my heart goes out to you. My mother-in-law passed away from Alzheimer's last year. She saw a giant monkey regularly on top of our neighbor's roof. She claimed she could see it from her bedroom window. She also referred to me as "the help." Her Hospice physician said these things are quite common with advanced Alzheimer's.
Outstanding free form poem and a true story within.
Sending you my best today as always,

Hi Doug. This poem is touching and emotionally charged from beginning to end. It shows the base situation that may occur when a person has the onset of dementia. You have handled it well here, my friend. Bob

"Can't you see it" - that's a powerful look at dementia for sure - when our mind begins to bend and things are shaped different, we want others to recognize what we see. And they don't.
good poem

Thank you, Gail. The idea came to me because of what my mother said. It stuck with me until I finally realized my Muse was trying to tell me something.

This is a lovely poem, Doug. Most of us, as we age, may lose our memory. Your fine piece about your mom is touching, especially:
"A mountain
of humility
to recognize
the reflection
of her brain
and all
its fading Glori."

Your poem touches my heart. It is very lovely and moving. Yes, we're all fading in one way or another. I must say that seeing "light emanating from a bag of sugar" would make me smile--really big.

Yes, that light is pretty cool. Wasn't aware my mother did drugs. I just think good tequila works just as well. Well...I do eat the worm. Doug
