Hello mystery writer. The poem is an observation the things that happened in the fall as a result of the change in season. Interestingly, you change the subject in the last two lines. That made it a profound statement about the person being in the fall of their life. Good luck in the contest.

Wow! I am blown away by the wistful beauty of this poem. You capture my heart with the longing of your tattered ferns and wilting flowers. I hate the change of seasons. I always feel as though I did not appreciate the season that is passing. But as you say, fall colors will soon shriek.
And, of course I must mention the poignancy of your final two lines. Everything about this poem is outstanding. I regret that I have only a 5 star rating to award.
