Awe, Sandra, this is just marvelous. I hate that I don't have a six left for you. I squandered them away on the first day having been away for so long. I hope you'll forgive me. This is an endearing poem for the contest telling a story within. Good luck, my friend. Ulla xxxx

Hello Sandra.

This is a very well written story about an event that turned two young boys into men. It's full of adventure, intrigue and even rescuing injured people from a tragic accident.

The perfectly rhymed couplets formed into stanzas made it so easy and smooth to read and understand.

Also, the picture that you have selected really adds meaning to your words with the last couplet bringing your story to a perfect ending.

I wish you the very best of luck in the contest...Bill

Thank you so much, Bill, for reading my poem, that and the lovely review. I used to go train spotting and would take my brother with me, although Mum wasn't impressed when we came home covered in soot. We used to stand in the middle of the bridge and get covered in the sooty smoke. That was half the fun! It's a loooong time ago now. I'm glad you enjoyed it, my new lovely friend. :)) Sandra xxx

This poem definitely tells a story. A believable one that brings the reader n to see, hear, smell and feel the emotion, the era, the wreck. Very well written with great rhyme.

Excellent job writing this story in a poem. Great job with the flow of words and action. It is very believable with the boy making a good choice to prevent a bigger accident from occurring. Thanks for sharing!

A lovely story. True? A story of heroism and resourceful thinking and all the things that turn young boys into wonderful, strong young men. Thanks for sharing it. Says the grandmother of an extraordinary nine year old.

I'm building up a few story poems for children in different age groups. My fairy poems are for the very young, this one will go in the book for children at school. I've got loads but have left them hanging about. Thank you for this really helpful review, that was all I needed to give me that extra push to get on with it. :)) Big hugs, my friend. Sandra xxx

Excellent story. Very interesting and understandable. It isn't easy to write a poem this long, all the while maintaining good rhyme and story content.
This is very well written. Sorry, I'm out of sixes.

I work in a local Railway Museum. This poem is brilliant it combines the gorgeous rhythm of these wonderful old steam trains with delightful rhyme. It truly deserves it's all time best rating of 56. Let's hope it climbs much higher.
Loved the story also. Is it based on a factual event?

It's not based on an actual crash, but it was something my brother and I would do when we were young, around 70 years ago! Our mum would moan when we came home filthy dirty from the sooty smoke, but it was such fun. The drivers would always pull the chain to give us a whistle. The rest was my overactive imagination, lol.
I expect you get to stand on the footplate all the time, do the whistles still work? Thank you so much for the lovely 6 stars, Bob, and the lovely comments you've made. All are so appreciated. Big hugs. Sandra xx

Puts me in mind of The Railway Children which I read way back when... great stirring story and I'm glad the boys got their reward. You could almost make a picture book text of this.

I loved that book, and if I was to search my attic, I'm sure I still have a moth-eaten, dog-eared copy. Did you see the series on the television? I watched it for the first time in 1951. (I can't believe I've admitted to being old enough to watch in then!!) Thanks for reading my poem, Sally, most appreciated! :)) Sandra xxx

No, I saw a movie with Jenny Agutter in it. Probably the 1970 version.
