Isn't it just weird how we are considered selfish when we look out for ourselves? Others say, "Me first, you selfish person!" and never notice that they, themselves, are being selfish. Anyway, much said in few words - nice job.

That really just says it all in a neat little package, doesn't it? I absolutely love this! Truth be told, MOST of us are just like this. I like the message of this and enjoyed reading this well written work. Great job and well done!

That is a good statement expressed in just a few words very clearly. It is always good to care about our own needs in a healthy way and also to care about others needs in a healthy way. Well written and thanks for sharing! Have a great day taking care of yourself. Just kidding.

The author's words are interesting, creative and thought provoking.
The reader thought about the theme of this poem and pondered on
the words needs and selfish. The title of this poem makes this poem
clear.

I
enjoyed this poem
and don't know what else to say

'cept
it's hard to review
little-uns over big-uns

'coz
big-uns are...big-uns
thus reviews are...um...bigger

and this was really, really good!

Laurel,

I had a hard time with this post. *smile* Yes, needs are important, and we should care for them as a priority. But in this instance, it's almost like the narrator is responding to an accusation of selfishness -- which makes me think that what this person is doing is gathering up items far beyond her 'needs' and just using that as an excuse.

That's my take, anyway.

In that way, this is kinda cool, 'cause it ends up being almost a story in just a few words. *smile* ('Course, I may be reading things in.)

The syllable count is correct - so this poem looks like it meets the criteria for the contest. Good luck!

It is written "love thy neighbor as thyself." While we may not all be Christian, I'm not aware of any religion or philosophy that outrightly teaches us to love others more than ourselves, even though some of us were raised to believe we should put others first. I think you express very well that it's ok to take care of yourself.

Boy these words are a perfect ditty for a Myers Briggs question to type match for personalities. Says more between the lines then within the profession of words. Thanks for sharing this. Write on and write often.

Guess it's not selfish to care about your needs - but at the same time one can find ways to care about others' needs. Buying a bit extra cuz it's on sale - cleaning out perfectly good used coats for the homeless.
Your poem is cute of course. And says a lot

How succinct and adequate. What a few words can convey is rich with meaning and you certainly (I'm guessing, tongue in cheek) have conveyed this with a great twist.
