I like Madame Bisset's sense of humour. Feline companion indeed...
There are some priceless details here, like the fact that the landlady wears rollers. You incorporate them into the narrative making it more believable.

You know I keep a little envelop here of sixes just for you, don't you? lol the thump in back of my head had translated into a persistent tapping- I don't mind the expression here but I'm wondering if 'the' may be included before back.
She settled, purring as she sunk her claws in and out of my leg. - yeah, that's cats for you... horrible creatures.
There's a nice juxtaposition there with the cat and Charles' scratches lol, as commented on by Helen's 'two-timer' comment.
What she omitted to tell me was that she also planned to meet with Jeanne, to make arrangements with unimaginable consequences for us both. / I had pocketed my diplomatic passport in addition to the regular one. It was a decision I would live to regret.- nice setting up for later events without giving anything away. lol
Now what does Bamforth want? - cue dramatic music.

Nonetheless, it was his by right, and that was an end to the matter, or so I thought. (I am betting more on this is too come.)
