Nice job. Sorry, I don't have anything very constructive to add. I did want to comment that we had student teachers from Slippery Rock, mostly Phys Ed. And I'll tell ya, I spent a year in Afghanistan and I'd rather do that again than face teaching grammar school!

Are you from Western PA? Thank you for your service. My sons have 5 combat tours between them. I appreciate you taking the time to read and review my story.

Yes, from the North Hills of Pittsburgh. Wow, that's a lot of tours, optempo pretty high these past years ..

I agree. It takes a special kind of person to handle a room of untamed kindergartners. Your shop experience was much better. haha
Good luck in the contest.

Hello Earl,
Congratulations on the win.
You've written an excellent non-fiction story, true ones are always the best.
I was a sub in a shop class. too. We stayed in the room but were not allowed to use the equipment. Try keeping them away from the machines.
Luckily I was never in a kindergarten class.
I'd have eaten the cookies with the kids. Let the parents get their own.
Well worth six cookies.

something different everyday
every day
"Oh, but they're loads of fun"
fun."
This is great fun. I've never subbed, not being a teacher, but I have taken loads of writing workshops with kids 4- and up. Hard work indeed. I hope you had SOME good days.

You went through all the trouble being a substitute teacher in the school. The experience you have had teaching paid off writing this story. Congratulations on winning the contest!

Enjoyed reading your story. Teaching definitely is not easy. I have two teachers in my own family. Their experiences are many...some make their day, some don't.

This is so well-written, descriptive, and humorous. You have made excellent use of examples to give us a little slice of the substitute "pie"!
I would rank subbing right up there with ditch digging.

It's probably between ditch digging and school bus drivers. I appreciate you taking the time to read and review my story.

I agree, subbing ain't easy. I tried that too but it was a 3rd grade class the a sixth grade class that did me in. I loved teaching Kindergarten. . .so I became a Pre-school teacher for the next 20 years. Loved this story and how much we all know, subbing ain't easy.
