A very well-written 5-7-5 poem about the rat catcher who hasaid no success getting rid of all the rats. He had to give up the dead end job and kill them all.

So funny! I was going to say change "eeking" to "eek-ing" just so it doesn't get confused with a misspelled "eking" but either way. Clever illustration fits perfectly. This inspires me to sponsor a pun-filled contest! Super post! Good luck in the contest.

You made a good suggestion, so I did change it to eek-ing. More easily seen by folks who skip over things. Thanks.
Your pun prompt would be a good one... will you do it soon?

Very nice (especially "eeking our a living"). Has all the clever word play one expects from a 5-7-5 - plus it's a novel topic - should do well in the contest.

I appreciate your supportive comments, Mark. I was pleased with myself for that 'eeking out a living' line!

This meets the contest requirements splendidly with a correct line and syllable count. The content is cleverly constructed and delightful in the reading. Good luck in the judging and thank you very much for sharing it.

I really like the word play in this short poem, Lisa, and the illustration chosen. Hard to imagine what an exterminator's job was like in Rennaissance Times. Is "eeking out" also a bit of onomatopoeia? Rod

    eeeeeeek! A mouse!
Thanks for your review, Rod. This poem was prompted by the fact I had a rat in my ceiling. There would have been so many during the olden days I guess the ratcatcher's job was secure employment.

Very clever and witty! Great illustration as well. Not a job I would want. But someone's got to do it. Should have entered this in a contest! Very different than the usual 5-7-5.

I'm loving the play on words here and this is a fine 5-7-5 Lisa and I wish you luck with the contest! It is a winner for me. Your few words are magical! Love Dolly x

Hi, I don't usually comment on poetry as it's not really my main interest, but this post made me smile. Given the restricted syllable count, you've not only delivered a humorous pun, but you've engineered a set-up for the joke. I think that's neatly done {smiles}.

Good luck with the competition {smiles}.

Do they still have rat catchers? I hope not. I thought they were something from a Dickens novel. It really would be a horrible job. Good luck in the contest.

Yes they do, because there are still rats! It is called 'pest control' these days. Thanks for your review, Cindy.

Hmm. Methinks he relies on his assistant, the cat, too much? It's a very interesting picture - pest control man in the olden days? I like how you emphasize the "dead end" with the "trapped" in the last line. Poor guy.

Not a job I would want! I think the image is from Elizabethan times.
