So well done, Helena, clearly stated lines from the statue of Liberty in which the very meanings are now construed to mean something else.

I very much like your entry because it's a gentler and more thoughtful ruffling of feathers.

Great luck to you in the voting booth.

Gloria

This is indeed a controversial poem. The truth of the matter is that we cannot possibly take everyone because everyone wants to come here. If they come, they must come in legally. No other country operates like this. You did fulfill the requirement of controversy. Marilyn

I think sometimes the most moving arguments, as with the "I Have A Dream" speech, are wen the writer/speaker simply reminds the reader/listener of what it is we profess to value - the contrast between that and what it is we're doing then becomes apparent.

The literal opposite of Emma Lazarus' words would be the "Send them back" chant recently heard at a Trump rally (not to mention that 3 of the 4 they wanted to send back were born here).

I love that yours ends on a hopeful note.

This meets the contest requirements nicely as anything even remotely connected to politics fans the flames of controversy these days. You chose two very good quotes to build your framework - I'd like to have seen a bit more of your won writing used in the resolution as the majority of this entry are the words of others. Good luck in the voting and thank you very much for sharing it.

Your 'controversial topic' is so very relevant and well expressed. I checked the other couple of reviews and was fascinated by your response to one of them where you discussed your research on the Pledge of Allegiance... about the original author who was against Church and State being put together, and then God was written in in 1954. I do not live in USA so it is a good opportunity for me to learn more by reading posts such as these. The current situation is a crisis for the States... some modification may well be inevitable.

No simple solution, but we can be better, and treat people humanely:)

Maybe we should treat people like animals after all??? We seem to be capable of lavishing love on animals.

Thank you for sharing your thoughts through your poetry. I certainly enjoyed reading it. You made a point that many can relate to, but I especially liked the optimistic hope for the future. And, I am sure that you accomplished the goal of ruffeling feathers.

When our children's children start wondering what happened to the meaning of those words, the blame falls squarely on our generation. So many people don't want those words to have meaning. It's causing such internal dissension that true problems like Iran, North Korea, and Russia pale in comparison.
You have an excellent poem that certainly complies with the prompt. I can't even think of anything more controversial at the moment.
Good luck in the competition.

Good read. One Nation, Under God - is what could have been placed there. As some may find it offensive or controversial not to mention him in this instance. But the conversations of our children's children will definitely be something worse than what we have today.

I looked up the origin of the Pledge of Allegiance, written in 1892,and discovered that the author was a firm believer in separation of church and state.
The words "under God" were added in 1954 ...
    So much to learn :)
