Thank you very much. I have to say when I first heard these words directed to me, I was not initially angry, I was surprised because I knew that the person saying it knew that I was born and raised in America.

Why do people have to have these same damn conversations over and over?? Because people don't listen to the answers and take them on board. PREJUDICED VIEWPOINTS make me sick!! Look at that... you were having to field crap for decades and people still are, when the 'Go Back' thing is utterly ridiculous. Your response back in 1968 makes perfect sense and WILL always make perfect sense. We are all immigrants at some point in time. I am just so darn grateful I live in New Zealand. I can't stand that racist attitude of so many... and some of them don't even know they are doing it... like your conversation back then revealed. He thought he was praising you, but he was insulting you. BIG difference.

Exactly. Whenever I receive unexpected praise nowadays, I am automatically on guard because of what happened previously. Thank you for your wonderful comments.

That is sad to hear about being on guard. It may well be a common experience that because I am white I have never experienced. Praise should be praise, not condescending. I praise your poem, please believe I am sincere.

We can only hope. It is a rare individual who accepts correction with sincere remorse for wrongheaded thinking. The world would be such a better place if this took place more often. I thank you so much for great comments.
