This shows how the people both work and celebrate on the island. Boy, her clothes are very colorful as is the background and font. I can see her dancing to the fast drum beats.
Good luck and keep writing

Kudos on your second place win in the contest, Dawn. I enjoyed your poem. Barbados has the most gorgeous clear waters probably because it's a coral island. Great music. I'm sure you know that Rihanna, the singing icon is partly Barbadian and partly Guyanese ( I was born in Guyana).
Hope you tasted the famous Mount Gay rum when you visited the island!
Blessings Julia

Hi Dawn. A joyful time when the cane crop is "in." Well described as the jubilant crowd dances to the calypso music. Your poem rhymes well, tells a story, and has excellent pace and flow. Nicely illustrated, too. Marilyn

Comment from Gloria ....
This is a superb poem. I love the way you open with the rush of wind through the fronds that carries on to describe some of the beauty of Barbados and time for sweet romance.
Excellent entry into the contest and good luck with the committee.

I relished your very creative interpretation of the "I Can" prompt. I could hear, taste and feel "the island's charm" and enjoyed your rhymed quatrains. Best wishes in the competition- Joan

Hi Dawn, oh you have a hit with me here. I've been to Barbados quite a lot and in 1995 I spent eight months there. You've hit the rhythm just right. I love that island a lot. Especially inland and the the North Western part. And the world's best rum. Yeah, sugar cane is big business indeed. All best. Ulla:)))

Somehow, you managed to make me feel the rhythm of the music. I've read how hard it is to harvest sugar cane. Your poem has a good beat and good rhyme. The jauntiness and colors make it almost like being there.

A celebration is had by all on the completion of the task of bringing in the sugar cane. They earned time off to regroup before having to return to the fields once again.

This is a very well done ABAB piece and it flows so lively and fresh. Celebration of whatever we can keeps us alive. Nicely done, great flow and rhyme
