This is a terrific story. We sure can mess things up thinking we know something that we don't. I loved this from start to finish and especially with the impossibly little ginger kitten.

Superb idea and development. Well worth a six star.

I value your opinion Gloria, so I am delighted you find favour with this story. That kitten has to be the cutest I've seen in a while (they're all cute though.)
My story nearly didn't make it into the contest because CEC contacted me to say that it didn't fit the idea of something getting away. I had to justify why it captured the idea of true love slipping away because of high expectations or incorrect assumptions. It's not that subtle, surely. Especially as I initiated the prompt in the first place, so why would I submit something not relevant to the topic and waste my money!!

That's just funny! How many times would you see the one that has all the attributes that you'd want in a potential match. Almost never. You of course mess the whole thing up by not correctly seeing the whole situation. Priceless! I really like this well thought out and very humorous work. Well done.

I am pleased to see via your review that you have a similar sense of humour and an awareness of how we mess things up.

You can't judge a book by its cover! Nor a blue eyed, red haired "beauty" by her chest!
An interesting read, that's for sure. Sure hope Kevin gets a relationship soon, and a new kitten. Good luck

Thanks for your review. Kevin is a bit of a sap, but everyone deserves to be happy. Maybe his check list was too long.

I enjoyed this story though Kevin is both picky and pathetic. His buddy seems to be doing all the work. I do, however, like the scene in the grocery store and your terrific ending. Rod

Thanks Rod. I tried to compensate for Kev's shyness by giving him hobbies, a love of animals, a job etc. He is just so shy he probably made that list impossible to protect himself. He's very lucky to have such a good friend. People who appear 'pathetic' to others can sink into depression and self-absorbed loneliness. I agree though... he is lacking in gumption to remedy his own situation.

A very well-written short flash-fiction about the one that got away. The perfect girl got away because of the kitten that was peaking through her chest make the men think it is a man dressed as a lady. The truth is embarrassing and the rare combo of the perfect girl got away.

Thanks for your review. The boys ran away too soon. The kitten might have popped its head up higher.

This meets the contest requirements nicely as you tell a story that incorporates the theme well. I saw no evidence of SPAG which made for a smooth and enjoyable read. Too bed he lost his chance for BOTH a lady and a kitten to love. Good luck in the voting and thank you very much for sharing it.

I felt very sorry for him, for the missed opportunity, by the time I finished writing the story. I could have made a happy ending where it all worked out well for him, but that might have been too trite. Hopefully he'll bump into her again some time and remedy the situation.

Oh, dear! Poor old Kevin. It looks as if he's headed for a life of bachelordom. Interesting information about the red hair/blue eyes combination. I'd not heard that before. I like the way you have characterised the relationship between Kev and the narrator.

Thanks for your comments about my story. Poor Kevin, indeed. I was a meanie and deprived him of potential happiness by not writing a happy ending for him.

The poor guy, kicking himself. If he had kept his cool in line, disappointed, sure, but no need to panic . . . A good entry for the one who got away. Good luck with thecontest!

We seems to forget our own flaws when we are looking for the perfect mate and I have been on dating sites and when the opposite sex is looking for something specific, I ignore those types and move on. The world is made up of all sorts and I am always interested in what's beyond the cover. Ireland is full of red heads with blue eyes! You should visit, I enjoyed the bumpy road of love and romance here, he he he, love Dolly x

I think I'd be too anxious to go on a dating website. Did you have success at finding someone compatible?
I read that UK has highest incidence of red hair/blue eyes in the world.

now I'm going to go in an entirely different direction regarding blue eyes and red hair. They have traced those two traits to genetics traced from Neanderthal.

No about your story. It was interesting how you kind of spun the reader 'round. It was very realistic. It becomes a universal prose. Who of us has not thought one thing only to be led to believe something totally opposite then to find out we were accurate in the beginning. This is well written. I have to give this A+

That is very interesting about the Neanderthal connection.
Thanks so much for your review, and especially the high rating.
