How sad when this happens between friends. One of my good friends is an agnostic and liberal to the core - while I am conservative and Christian. We love each other, worry over each other's kids - talk every day - she says "if I didn't care about you and love you..." - well, that's for sure. But we continue to be good friends.
Your poem made me think.

If we allow God to guide our life, won't have to worry about a trickster getting a foothold in our lives. I enjoyed reading your poem. It flows smoothly and has a wonderful message.

even so, now and then, someone you thought was a true friend ends up stabbing you in the back,

Whether we see it coming or not, betrayal is betrayal. It cuts deeply and one may never fully recover. There will be scars. Hopefully, there are enough good friends to take the bite somewhat out of the act of disloyalty. Judas was one of twelve. Jesus focused on the remaining loyal ones.

You have used strong word choices to describe the shock and heartbreak
of being sucker-punched by a deceiver--especially when it's someone you
thought was your friend.

I never made that connection between Jesus and Caesar and their betrayers, interesting. It is indeed unexpected when a friend and or lover betrays you.

Ah yes, one best friend can easily become one's best enemy- all your quirks and talents make you vulnerable to a constant bombardment of words and actions meant to destroy you.- Lobber

Betrayal is one of the worse affronts someone can commit against us because it means that we have put our faith in a person(s) who turned against us. The pain can be unbearable. You words ring true and it is sad whenever this situation occurs.

I think we've all been betrayed at least once and it can certainly feel like a dagger. Definitely not a good feeling but thankfully we somehow learn to move on and more than likely a life lesson along the way

Yes, I agree. It is the worst assault when it's from someone you've spent a lifetime trusting. It makes one question, "Was it ever real?" Nicely done! xo

You are so right! I have had that happen to me, and I didn't expect it. It still hurts and rankles. Your words are exactly what it's like to be betrayed, I am sure Jesus felt it, even though he knew it was going to happen. This is a very well-written poem, and a pleasure to read. :)) Sandra x
