First, don't shoot the messenger He was just doing a duty he probably had no great desire to do. Secondly, he probably has some of the same sentiments. Good story.

Excellent, I agree medals can not replace lives, but when a loved one is killed in action, that's about all that can be given. That an a show a respect for loss.

Hi there,

I think you did a great job with this piece. I loved the 'hung with military sympathy'. I thought that was a super way of describing things. Very matter-of-factly but intensely effective.

The last line completely sells it, having it come from the sibling.

Great stuff and best of luck

The subject is heart wrenching. The writing is clear, illustrating the difficulty of the deliverer of the news but its dramatic effect in different ways on the members of the family. It is worthy of the highest rating. I see no way to improve it.

This story with its terse style and tragic theme is like a lesson in show rather than tell. All the emotion is expressed in the action. The sister's anguished words are a vehement rejection of the glory that is supposed to be the prize for those who are victims of war.

Congratulations on your win.

Blessings Julia

Thank you for the read and review. Much appreciated. I hate the use of glory to describe the experience of war.

And dreaded it would be, this is a beautiful yet very sad read, you are quite correct no amount of medals or praise can replace a loved one, very well done****kahpot

You did an excellent job crafting this short story full of emotional anguish and angst. The dialogue... heart cries from the oldest sibling, were well chosen and marked your story as intensely real. Well done.

This eighty-word flash fiction story, The Dreaded Visit, has the proper word count and creates a scene that no one ever wants to be in.
