I'm mostly in agreement with you, Rachelle, but I can't join in the celebration or the platitudes right now. I believe our democracy is under threat--and so is the legacy I would hope to leave for future generations. Our politics have turned vile and divisive.
Our flag is torn. I can't celebrate until the rent is mended.
One man's opinion.
Peace, Lee

I'm not blind to our issues, but (a) it's not the first time we've had issues here, (b) we won't improve anything focusing solely and exclusively on what's bad, and (c) we can't move past them unless everyone's willing to acknowledge that there is LOTS and LOTS of good still left. And if we make it our business to show that good to the next generation(s), then they know how to proceed --by avoiding the bad-- to keep it intact.
Just one woman's opinion.
Peace...a REALLY good place to start!

Rachelle, you make it sound as if I'm unpatriotic because I'm concerned. Concern is a good thing. It means we're aware, and we care. If we pretend everything is jolly, we're not helping anyone. Sure, we have a lot to be thankful for, but we have a lot lose, too, if we don't face our problems head on. I don't mean to argue with you, but I have the right to voice my opinions, too. Lee
-
I have no problem with you voicing your opinion, Lee. I like when people want to intelligently discuss things. I don't understand how you got the 'You think I'm unpatriotic because I'm concerned' aspect, though.
Aware is great. I don't disagree with that in any way. Aware is CRUCIAL! But aware also carries with it how to steer AWAY from the problem. The longer we perseverate on what's wrong instead of heading toward how to fix it, the longer we stay stuck and spin our wheels.
I didn't find your rebuttal 'unpatriotic.' That assessment is all on you. I'm going to say, though, that that is actually part of what is wrong with conversations today; people can't seem to have differing opinions without someone's feelings getting hurt.
I expressed an opinion, you expressed yours. I answered back. No harm, no foul.
-
Okay. I'd just rather be vocal about the things that bother me. Protest has a proud tradition in this country.
What does perseverate mean?
L
-
Okay.
-
perseverate: to think and think about something rather than act.
-
This vignette comes to mind: There was another teacher I used to work with at the JCC whose last name was Wetcher. Because she was PERPETUALLY complaining, I used to refer to her in my mind as "Kvetcher," which is Yiddish for 'one who complains.' One morning, she stood in the doorway of Early Child Office, directly across from the supplies room, going ON and ON and ON about what a STY it was and how SHAMEFUL it was that it was in SUCH DISARRAY, blah, blah, blah. She went on so long, she actually began blocking the door and making other teachers' ingress and egress impossible, so her audience was growing. I finally couldn't stand it anymore. I began repeating every same word she'd said, but as I said them, I was in the supplies room clearing up the mess, straightening the shelves, and making a DIFFERENCE to the way the room looked.
I didn't disagree with that fact that room looked awful; it did! But rather than merely 'protesting' it, I fixed the problem. I didn't have to say a word; my actions spoke volumes. And they made any further of her 'protests' unnecessary.
-
Now you've lost me, Rachelle. The poem I reviewed suggests everything is hunky dory. My review suggests we have problems to deal with.
Somewhere along the line, we stopped discussing the original point. Your poem suggested you think the country faces no problems--never mind any inclination to fix anything. I think we're not communicating. L
-
Examples of my not thinking 'everything is hunky dory': (a) "through trying times, we trust"
(b) "And though we've known good times and bad."
I do not for one minute dispute that we have problems, Lee; I just think we have way more going FOR us than AGAINST us. So why would I choose to play up what's less prevalent?
-
I'll let the protestors go that route.

I agree, Rachelle. This country has had so many trials and tribulations, but so have many other countries. I believe we have been more fortunate as well, than other countries. I'm not always happy with the direction that our government sometimes takes. But I don't want to live any place else. I love this country. Your words are true and sincere, and I appreciate that. Best wishes.

Thank you, Victor. People, I believe, lose sight of the fact that other countries have problems, too. And if you don't GO to those places and see it for yourself, it's easy to imagine their grass is greener. But it's not.
I appreciate your review very much. xo
-
You are most welcome, Rachelle. It is always a pleasure to interact with you and I appreciate your thoughts. Take care.
-
You sweetie, Victor. xo

At 72, I prefer smooth talker, but "sweetie" is right up there.
-
Can I call you a smooth-talkin' sweetie?! Best of everything then!!
-
Lady, you may call me anything you like. Thank you for the banter.
-
...except not later for dinner, right? Ba-doomp-boomp, CHINNNNNGGGGGG!
-
And thank you Mrs. Calabash, wherever you are!

I'm old enough to know that reference!!! :)

A very well-writtenpoewm for independence day. Indeed one person cannot restore all the damage that was done over the years, every USA citizens have to stand together to retrieve their independence quickly.

That is exactly right, Sandra. If, one by one, we remind ourselves and our progeny what IS good here, then suddenly, we feel stronger and more satisfied and willing to work together. It starts with each of us.
Thank you for this validating review. xo

Before I go any further, FSBFF, please, please, please change your first word from "This" to "There."
I love the focus on the "US" in "USA," and the fact that we're all in this together. I particularly like how this is illustrated in "Home of the free because of the brave," alluding to all the military and first-responders and others who put their own safety second to defending our freedoms.
Your patriotism glows - but so too, unfortunately, do those red letters, which are blinding against the blue background. I also find the blue running only the length of the lines, and not the full background, to be distracting. You're saying a lot of very important things, but the layout and colors are bring my attention less to what you're saying and more to how the page is displayed. (Well, you did want honesty.)

Yes, thank you. I have formatting issues. I'll see if I can do something to make the message be what stands out rather than the colors. xo
-
[Fireworks emoji] - which, by the way, is way more effective when you can actually show it and not just say the words!!!
-
Ohhh, but shame on you for liking emojis. You're much too talent (and rhythmetical) a writer for such nonsense! xo
-
Oh, be fair. They're so emotionical.
-
That's because I have emotionicality. Just like you have no rhythmicality. We all have our little flaws in this life is all, FSBFF. We still like each other just the same, though, right? (That's me, being logicalical.)
-
Of course. That's unquestionableical. We accept each other, flaws and all, because we're sympathetical and empathetical and parenthetical (oops, real word, wrong context). Well, you know what I mean. Now I'm just getting repeticiocus.
-
Suddenly I have an inexplicibical desire for a popsicle!
-
It's warm, so that's totally understandabibble
-
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAH!! Omg. I just love you!!! xo
-
Thank you, and it's totally mutuable!

I love the way you formatted this poem, and it's very well-written. We need to add peace to our legacy by accepting everyone has the same. Great job.
Good luck in the contest!
Have a great day, and God bless.

Good point, papa55mike. At the moment, it's a bit of an elusive quality...but that won't always be the case.
Thank you for this really nice review. xo

Good poem. I enjoyed the flow and rhyming scheme you chose. I appreciate your positivity and the hope and willingness to pass it to the next generation. I hope we can, especially with so much negativity in the world right now.
