It's a myth that America is a melting pot. When immigrants come to America, they tend to gather in groups. Some speak their native language all their life. We wind up with China town, Little Italy, and so forth, England is a melting pot. When people move to England, almost immediately they begin speaking with an English accent. Actually, if you ask a Brit they tell you they don't have an accent. That's what words sound like when they're pronounced correctly.

Hmmm. Well, I have tons of students from WILDLY different heritages, and they co-habit in the same towns and attend the same schools. I can't speak for (or LIKE, either) the Brits, but I know here, in my own little corner of the world, it is, indeed, a melting pot.

I like the background matching the flag and also the patriotic rhymes at the end of the couplets. It reminds us we have to work together to keep America 'us' not 'me:". I also like the nod to those who serve in the military.

Good luck in the contest. Keep writing

Joan

Thank you very, very much, Joan. If we keep on promoting the good, then we'll make it easier to want to work shoulder-to-shoulder to work through the bad. I really appreciate this wonderfully positive review. xo

Having been to the US on several occasions, when my son in law was assigned there, I loved the visits, and although we are seperate nations, ours was founded by a mixture of peoples, a melting pot of similarities. Settled by the British, including me, (I came here with my parents in 1951) we have one yank, born in New York six years ago, Miah, beautfully written Rachelle, I loved it, blessings, Roy

Absolutely beautiful poem and worded so delicately! for what we stand for and what we believe in! And it makes me sad that it seems every day we get something taken away from us. Everyone else seems we have to tiptoe around so as not to upset someone. Thanks for sharing such a great poem!

It's true. But there are lots of 'phases' we've gone through as a country, and I think this is just one more. Eventually the pendulum of common sense will swing back and people will realize that this is not in our best interest. That's one of those messages we have to be tenacious about passing down to the next generation. Eventually it WILL sink in.
Thank you for this super nice, very encouraging review, Patricia. xo

Hello Rachelle
Independence day is a great time of the year to celebrate the many nations that make up the nation. Rightly so you said it is a melting pot. Sometimes it can just boil over with radicals voicing their voice.
Best wishes
Sylvia

But there aren't more radicals than there are Regular Folk, so eventually they'll boil down and become part of the roux. We just need to be tenacious about maintaining a steady fire --one that warms rather than burns-- for our progeny.

Great review. Thanks very much. xo

I loved your approach to this write Rachelle, yes USA standing for "US" is a great statement. I heard the phrase: 'Making America great again,' when I always though it was 'Great' already, love Dolly x

Okay time to put you on whatever bus, plane or train that you can get to take you to the capital to share this on the House and Senate floor because they need to remember who we are so that they may better represent US!
Solid work. Eloquently stated!

Hi Rachelle: I liked the first verse where you compared the first person singular and first person plural pronouns. It is very unfortunate but a lot of America doesn't move beyond the first person singular. I also like the blue word background on the red field of the image, followed by a description of what America is in regard to personal responsibilities and privileges. That's a great combination. It's a very good piece and I wish you luck in the contest. -Robert-

Rachelle,

Super duper poem honoring all the best about our fabulous country. It's great to finally read something that's favorable for a change! I don't know how people can honestly talk bad about this place. I mean, you have to LOOOOOOK for the wrong in my opinion. Good grief.

Thanks so much!

IT'S SO TRUE!!! Look at other countries, and it's a slam-dunk winner. Do people really feel there aren't problems in other places??! Oy. How naïve.

Thanks for this lovely, validating review, Robyn. xo

There may be no I in United States, but a lot of individuals help build what we have today. Your poem rhymed, makes sense, and it should invoke. emotions within the reader. Nice job.
