You're right, Rachelle. The pluses outnumber the minuses, and we can be grateful for that.

There is no "I" in USA,
but there is an "US." <-- Very clever. Never heard this said before, and it's worth remembering!

The inspiration came when I remembered a college application letter written by one of my (very athletic) piano students. She was hoping for a sports scholarship and wrote: "There is no 'I' in team, but there is a 'me' in Amherst." [She was accepted...AND got sports scholarship money, too!] Isn't it so funny where inspiration can come from, Phyllis? And how long a good idea can lie dormant in the brain? That girl is going to be thirty-five this year!

Thanks for the encouraging review. xo

The king was getting too big for his crown, I think, Colin. xo

Love it. You are such a closet poet. You should come out with these more often, but I do not even know how you fit them in with your chapters and such! Great job on the US in USA. I have rarely, if ever heard that pointed out. A fantastic patriotic, non-partisan piece. Proves we were great all along. We do not need to be made great AGAIN. Even with our faults, who the heck would want to live elsewhere? Not this chick!
Great Job!
Wendy

Not this chick, either, Wendy. And the more we realize what's GOOD, then the less we accept what isn't and work to ensure that the bad --and what country DOESN'T have something bad about it?-- remains in the background.

Thanks for the warm and validating review. (And I love that you think I'm a closet poet! Until I joined FS, my poems all began Roses are red/Violets are blue. Perhaps it's the musician in me that you're hearing!)

Not only in the USA. When people complain about the educational system and the NHS (which of course can be improved), I often think of how lucky I am to live in the Western world.
Thanks for sharing this lovely poem.
P.S. I love the USA too.

You are SO right! Every country has its problems. But, just as with people you know, you do more harm than good, when you focus on the flaws.

I really appreciate this nice review. Thank you, Maria.

"Our Legacy", is an extremely well-written and patriotic piece. This talented poet's work was a pleasure to both read and review. I look forward to seeing your next post.

This well-composed poem is a stirring tribute to the positive aspects of the country we, who are its citizens, love.

Though many unique individuals contributed to our founding and later success, you are right that America is not about any one single leader or ruler (as so many other countries were or still are), which is why George Washington declined to become our king (as was the custom in most of the world at the time). Instead, we are a union of free individuals who chose and continue to choose to work together to achieve what none of us could accomplish alone -- the strongest, most prosperous nation on Earth, whose wealth is distributed among its people to an extent beyond the wildest dreams of anyone in the world prior to our founding, and whose influence raised living standards globally since then.

Yes, to the extent that we accept differences as a benefit -- bringing more points-of-view, ideas, modes of problem solving, and skills to bear than otherwise would be possible -- we are indeed a beneficial melting pot.

Yet, maintaining what we have achieved is not automatic. It requires constant vigilance and, sadly, occasional battle. We have two perpetual enemies -- apathy and Evil, and the latter never hesitates to promote apathy and neglect (especially by distorting history in the minds of the young, to hide both the truth and past blunders). When Evil acts more directly, we must fight back, just as we did to gain our initial independence from tyranny. Thus we did indeed become the "Home of the free because of the brave" -- and must maintain that status the same way.

The colors chosen for our flag were not reliably explained by our founders, but when President Ronald Reagan declared 1986 to be the Year of the Flag he said: "Red for courage and readiness to sacrifice, white for pure intentions and high ideals, and blue for vigilance and justice."

Those who want to destroy freedom in this world know that cannot be done while the United States still exists in the form our founders intended, which requires a moral populace willing to fight for our principles. Accordingly, what is positive in our culture MUST be passed on to later generations -- despite efforts to the contrary in schools, the biased "mainstream" news, and the politicians who tell themselves they will be immune to the devastation which will occur if they succeed in their subversive tactics.

Your poem says all this far more succinctly. Superb, and aptly illustrated.

You are most welcome, Rachelle. There's a degree of similarity among patriotic posts on this site, but yours goes beyond that in refreshing ways, particularly your focus on the positive. -- Mike

Love the artwork, Rachelle. This is the most positive poem I have read about the US of A in a long time, and I love it. And of course your entire presentation is just so dang creative.

Awesomeness in the extreme.

I am a positive soul so i agree with you whole-heatedly friend. One must put their positive feet forward first and foremost. Embrace the beauty and freedoms you have earned, fought for, sacrificed for.
A nice, thought provoking poem, good Luck!

May this always be true! A rousing cheer for our nation that encourages us to pause and reflect upon why we are great. This would be great stitched in a sampler and hanging on my wall!! Do you embroider? ;)

I am so proud to be an American also. Despite all its faults it is the most wonderful country to live in. My ancestry on my mother side goes even further back than the revolutionary war and I couldn't be prouder of those ancestors . Also I am a veteran and I was one of the last women to join the army under the title of WAC (Women's Army Corps). The women who came after were combined with the men and everyone was just called enlisted men and enlisted women, so I am very proud to have been part of that Corps group. God bless America!

You?re so welcome, but I didn?t contribute even a fraction of what those who gave their lives and those who face the front lines have given :)
reply by the author on 20-Jun-2019
But you contributed way more than I did...or thousands upon thousands of others. So, my gratitude remains in place. xo
