This is awesome. While they tend to remind me of big rats, I do still swerve to miss them on the road! I think they are amazing. From my office window, we have watched a lumbering pregnant one sneak into and out a shed. She is huge! This is an informative little piece done within small parameters of the contest and I love it that you included the lengthy author notes. Always something to be learned there!
Good job and great photo choice!
Wendy

Thanks Wendy for a great endorsement of my short verse (5-7-5 is my go to genre for just about any posting). Yep, I learned something too from my internet search.

I appreciate your sharing your personal experience with these critters (-:

I did not know marsupials weren't native to Australia, were there dinosaurs? I found your notes to be very informative, well researched, and educational. Nice job.

    Earl,

Now we know that the opossum found in the the USA are just cousins to the other marsupials in Australia. It is amazing what the Internet uncovers to expand our knowledge. LOL

THANKS again for your review of my 5-7-5s.

Your contest entry was fun to read, Mark. Good job on the syllable count per line. The art choice is a nice pairing. Thanks for the informative notes, too. Best wishes. Jan

This is an excellent ode to the possum. I didn't know that it was nearsighted. They do I understand when feeling in danger, do a great act of playing dead. You've done a fine job describing the possum in this well written work. Well done!

    Jeffrey,

THANKS for your review and comments. You may be right about their playacting if in danger. Truthfully, I never saw them do this.

This is an excellent 5/7/5 poem. I live on this island continent so I'm reasonably au fait with these by enlarge gentle creatures, they don't have many natural enemies so they survive quite well. Domestic cat gone wild are the worst. Well done, good job, blessings, Roy

    Roy,

THANKS for your review and comments. I knew about those feral cats, but also thought your kangaroos boxed and could be of some danger to humans in the wild. LOL.

Don't believe all you see or hear, kangaroos are herbivores, about as dangerous as Deer.

Dear Mark,
I enjoyed your excellent short poem and topic! I also enjoyed, "painted pink paws". Your Author's note is entertaining and I did not realized 70 million years is the record for Marsupials! Great short poem!
My best,
Deborah

    Deborah,

Oh do I like to use alliterations even if it is only with the first letter and not the actual sound. Pleased you like this posting and my notes. The opossums, like other marsupials, carry their babies in their pouch. Think of the kangaroo and her little roos (-:

Nice one, Mark. Seen them but never like too. Nasty creatures. I think your words really reflect the artwork and the nature of the animal. Nice job.

I really, really like this, Mark. You have gotten so good in my absence. I particularly like the sound combinations of "lumbering 'possum," "near-sighted night," and "painted pink paws." You paint a realistic, nice-sounding image.
It's good to be back. I have been traveling and then I got sick. Probably just nerves, but I am better now.
