CUTE. Stunner ending again. Thought I was headed for a heartbreak. Solution: At end of year (or spring cleaning time!) throw all single socks away. I promise you, you will then within a week find the match. This is really cute. Great job and Good Luck!

I'm sure your method works. It's Murphy's Law.

It is not the fault of the sock but the washing. Note I do not blame blame the machine for the sock can go missing when hand washing and line drying.

I was trying to guess the little twist, but I failed. Very clever little story about something that happens a lot, I'm sure there are many socks that eventually get from washing machine piping to the storm water drains and float away.lol
cheers,

Thank you for my regular dose of your addictive flash fiction. I enjoyed the hints - perfect match, other half - but didn't clue in until the second last stanza.

I have always been intrigued by 'the missing sock' phenomenon that is at the heart of your delightful little story, beautifully and deceptively told.
What is it with socks!!? I always keep my pairs together perfectly well... I peg them out together and take them off the line together. So this must be the clue: other people must use tumble dryers and they get separated and the dryer eats one of the pair??
Your story reminded me of one of my own stories I posted a few months ago where I portrayed a pair of ski mittens, one of which got lost in the snow.

You got me--with the surprise ending! This is really cute, creating a sock character that cries when the mate disappears. Where DO the socks go!? One thing: "Forever" is one word.

He he he, I loved your fun words and my daughter has a brand new washing machine but it seems it has been pre-trained to lose socks and so the saga continues! He he he, love Dolly x

See? This is why I became a fan! You write so well...and with a wry wit and sense of humor that I can so relate to! Where DO those missing socks hide I wonder? I have a theory they are kidnapped and replaced with SCADS of clothers hangers! (Smiles)---Karenina
