This is perfect poem describes the wanderlust spirit in all of us. The something beckoning us elsewhere. I love the last stanza as it completes and defines the theme. Great job!

I always wondered about Shangri-La... is it a blessing or a curse? I mean, wonderful... you find it and you can live forever! Weeeeee!!!!! But what happens when you decide to leave after a few hundred years or so... you step outside the boundaries and poof! You're dust! Well, it's cheating death too, so really it's a real temptation. Life wasn't meant to be that way... or was it? Could Shangri-La be the real Garden of Eden? Peaceful and ageless? Or a wicked sin... a cheat??? I guess we'll never know. ;)

Thanks so much for the excellent review and for your interesting perspective on the poem. I hadn't really thought of Shangri-La in the sense of a heaven, or a Garden of Eden; more like the ultimate destination, that destination that always seems one step beyond where you are now. It's more like the hope of going somewhere, that is always on your mind. estory

Hi estory. Oh, I like this free verse poem and what I especially like about it is the way it goes way beyond the highways in your own territory. You can well imagine how it would appeal to me having travelled the world. I liked your poem and I like it a lot. All best. Ulla:))

You've given me itchy feet reading your poem. It's a wonderful ever-expanding road trip you've taken me on, expanding the mind with local then international observations, moving from the physical to the spiritual, as our own life journey does.

Thanks so much for the excellent review and all your wonderful comments supporting this poem. I am glad you enjoyed the journey, and found it uplifting. Nothing like a road trip to clear the cobwebs and put a jolt into a commonplace routine...estory

It's time I hit the road again... especially if it prompts me to write something wonderful like you have!

You are right, the ending is perfect.
And I like the central idea: there is always a place further away that we can still visit and where we can discover new things and meet new people.
Thanks for sharing.

Well, I think you did a fine job in your poem to take us on a journey of wanderlust. Life is always a journey in distance, mind and also in spirit. Every day we have the privilege of learning something new. Good job!!

Thanks so much for the excellent review and for all your wonderful comments supporting this poem. Glad you enjoyed your journey, from the highway to the freeway, from the Midwest plains to the Himalayas, smelling those cherry trees on the other side of the world. estory

I like the way the horizon gradually expands as one moves through the three parts of this poem. It starts well grounded in the US road system and ends not just with the idea of scaling the highest mountain in the world, but beyond, into the realms of the imagination and conceptualisation of realms beyond. There's a nice implicit metaphor in this for man's journey.

This is very well written. A road trip to heaven if I interpret the ending correctly.

I daresay wanderlust is imprinted in our genetic code from the days when humans set out from Mother Africa to colonize the earth. So this poem is sure to appeal to a wide audience.

I love the way you engage the senses throughout the write. But for me the final stanza of part 1 is the most evocative. You were flying!

Thanks so much for the excellent review and for your encouraging remarks supporting this poem. Also the specifics of that opening stanza. I actually thought the poem got stronger and stronger as it went on, and I like the third stanza best. But sometimes readers can surprise you. estory

Travel broadens our horizons and helps understand how other people live and this understanding helps have compassion for others. I have seen many different places in the world, but I've never been to China or Japan, but I have seen a Japanese garden in Funchal, Madeira, love Dolly x

Thanks so much for the excellent review and for all the wonderful encouraging comments, as well as your perspective, on the poem. I've never been west of Pittsburgh, so for me the west, and the orient beyond it, is a kind of magical place, a Shangri-La of the imagination. estory
