Aw, that is so sad, but I can understand how and why a person would want that. Pain can be so debilitating, some pain more than others. I think it's when you know it's never going to end in this life, that we pray to go now. You've stacked a lot into these very few words, a very emotional poem. Good luck in the contest. :)) Sandra xx

Thank you, Sandra.

This is quite an interesting question that you pose in your eight syllables! As a hospice MSW, I have very strong opinions on this topic... (which I won't waste your review space with, except to say that pain is not the usual reason people want this route). You have done a very fine job of bringing a difficult topic to the forefront, by giving it poetic attention! I commend you!

Thanks, Beri. I applaud the work you do. I have a 90 year old father, 90 year old father-in-law who are fortunate to be well enough to still live on their own. I also have an 80 year old mother-in-law with moderate > severe dementia living in memory care and admire and respect her caregivers. Who knows what lies ahead for my Dads but counting my blessings each day they are well. The pain I reference in my piece comes in many forms, physical is just one flavor. I suspect the pain of being a burden, or of missing a loved one, or of just not having the will anymore all contribute. Thanks again for weighing in!

Thanks Chip! You're right... it's depression that's usually at the bottom of a request for dying assistance. Sometimes people are also in terrible fear too. It's great the dad's are doing so well, and memory care is a Godsend for families! All the best to you!

This is a rather unfortunate situation, Chip, although it makes a good 2-4-2 poem.
Personally, I couldn't, and some others wouldn't. My very best wishes in the contest.

sadly this patient looks upon his future, your metaphorical distant sea, and the possibility that his life is slowly disappearing
let's hope the sun will shine just a bit before he passes into another restful place without his drip-drop and discomfort
special you can say so much in such few words
good luck in your entry

That is a tough one friend and I think for many it would be a faith dilemm. I don't have that so for me it would be jump I'm afraid. I have watched loved ones suffer till their end and the stress/pain it causes those around them is terrible and that pain can haunt them for years. A great little thought provoking 2-4-2 poem Chip, good luck mate!

Hello Poet, this is a cryptic little poem that is meant to work with the picture I presume. I don't believe this write stands alone as a poem, but I wish you much luck at the judges' table with this sensitive nod to euthanasia.

Thanks, Catch. I find it more reliant on the title.

An interesting poem. Is the character asking help from God or asking someone to help them die and be released from the pain? Most of us, as we get older will be asking for this. Best wishes.
