A very thought inducing poem. You have fit a big moral and life question in such a small poem that I'm sure many will think and come up with an answer inside themselves for.

I would not, Chip, primarily due to my personal religious convictions and what I was brought up to believe about suicide.
Would I pray for death?
Oh, absolutely.
I might even consider something like Dr. assisted suicide.
Look, even our dogs are granted mercy and compassion and given an injection of pentobarbital to put them to sleep if they're suffering.
Don't we deserve to die with at least the same dignity?
Best of luck in the 2-4-2 poetry contest.

Thanks, Dean! It's purposely ambiguous in my poem- the subject is either asking a friend/loved one/physician or God to help with the transition. I hadn't thought about the suicide bent, but it's plausible. It might be too heavily reliant on the title for the meaning.

Your poem offers a tricky situation. Not many would take the easier way out. Then again, dying ain't easy, especially with constant pain (I'm no stranger to that.)Being a nurse eon's ago, I couldn't give that final jab. Bless you, K.

This is a most interesting contest entry, Chip. Your few words/syllables, as required speak volumes to readers. Your picture choice is perfect and so poignant. I understand what this poem is saying--free to leave this Earth because of illness. Good job and thanks for sharing. Best wishes. Jan

You have presented a sad but true scenario in this brief writing.
The quality of life is all to important to ignore, and should be respected.
A very appropriate photo-art selection for your theme.
Best wishes with this worthy entry.

I love that you're a little poem is asking us something, not telling us something. Any poem that makes a person think is good in my opinion. I especially like that it's a moral dilemma, in my opinion, you pose. How human are we and do we respond to the suffering? Are we willing to sacrifice our time and resources to help someone else who is hurting? This is a great entry for the contest as the form and content and illustration all work together to result in a creative and artistic entry!

This says a lot in a small space. And I liked the questions, leaving the whole thing kind of up in the air; is escape possible? is it ethical? You verify the idea with that middle line, the pain is so bad. Interesting. estory

Wow! This is a thought-provoking work. I'm reminded of Dr. K. and the big debate over assisted suicide. There are no winners in these situations. Tragic, no matter how you look at it.

Kevorkian came to mind. As did thirty years of patients I had the honor of caring for as an RN. I will tell you they were the bravest souls -- who struggled against all odds to be...just "be"...one more day. --Karenina
