This is a great post and it was lovely to read such a moving tribute to your adopted country. You forgot to mention the wonderful films that come out of NZ too. Here's hoping you all stay as sweet as you are for many years to come. :)

In this article I was sticking to 'firsts' that NZ did... if I added all the other world-stage accomplishments of kiwis it would be a much longer read. Most FS readers probably have limited time to read an opus!

Well written essay on New Zealand. I learned so much about your country. It seems to number one in many areas. Thank you for sharing.
Blessings,
Elaine

I think you punch above your weight in NZ. I was born in Liverpool in the UK, but we migrated here in 1951, I'm a died in the wool Aussie, but I hold two passports, as do my Aussie kids, (there are advantages to being a Pom) of course I knew these facts about our little cousin, I think our women got the vote 1995, England was 1918, well done LisaMay, didn't know you were a Kiwi, well done, good write, blessjngs, Roy

I am proud of my Aussie passport but I love living here in NZ. I've been here for 35+ years but will keep being an Aussie. I think of myself as an Anzac, just battling on with my life like most of us.

"A motorcycling Kiwi, Burt Munro, sped fastest for a land speed record in 1967 on the Bonneville Salt Flats. His record in that category still stands. He was 68 years old and was riding a 47-year-old machine when he set his last record. What a legend. We're good at that sort of thing." ... Well, you know the old saying by now I'm sure, LisaMay...
"Heroes always get remembered but true legends never die." ~Unknown
In a bumbled attempt to make friends at a new job I'd started, I once made the mistake of asking a fork lift driver what part of Australia he hailed from.
"I'm not from Australia, mate," he growled. "I'm a Kiwi and damn proud of it. Don't you forget that!"
Who knew?

Good story there Dean. Kiwis get prickly about that sort of thing... probably like Canadians being thought of as USA.
I'm glad you put the NZ flag up and not the Aussie one... some people can't tell the difference.

It sounds a wonderful place to live. My step-son worked in New Zealand as a chef for 1 year before coming home to open a restaurant here in the UK.
I would love to visit, but it's too far for me to travel. I did enjoy reading about your country. Well done. :)) Sandra xx

I enjoy living here very much. It is a pity it is so far away from everything as i would love to travel more myself, but the distance puts me off, like you. It is part of NZ's charm that it is so far away and that keeps us special.

I found this an interesting read, full of facts I was previously unaware of. Your humour raised a smile quite a few times as well - great juxtapositioning added to the bare bones humour.

A little squiggle at the end of the world: NEW ZEALAND. - Ha, ha. I've never heard this before.

...we pirouette on the periphery of the world stage - this is great descriptive narrative :)

Thank you for brightening my day :)

I have 'fanned' you, even though I already ave a list that is over 500 members long... *sigh*... But there is really no other way to track an author we admire, and everything I have read of yours thus far simply 'sings'.

I am so pleased that you have been enjoying my work. I do think I have improved a lot, reading so much and reviewing over the past 4 months. I do like that you think my writing 'sings'.

What a wonderfully informative and, let's not leave out, entertaining-as-can-be, write, LisaMay!! :) ;) So much we didn't know about the little 'sortof island nation' ... and, I just have to tell you, that bumper sticker you ended with? I've got tears in my eyes from laughing so hard! ;) ;) Thanx for the smile before I wrap things up for the school year, Beautiful Lady -- hope by the time you read this you have had a good night's rest! ;) ;) Take care! ;) Yvette

Haha... I'm pleased you get my humour. There were a few other things i probably could have added to that hypothetical bumper sticker but I only have a little car.

This is fascinating and very well written. You cover your history and cultural connections with pride of approval for your country, truer to your values than Australia, where you were born. I would be proud too of a country with high expectations of itself, which it reaches with humble acclaim. This is interesting, and nice to see your pride in the country you have chosen to live in and represent. I saw nothing I would change in this non-fiction piece. Thank you for sharing knowledge and history you can be proud of.
Take care, Jesse

What a lovely review Jesse. I appreciate your kind comments and 6 rating. Our prime minister, Jacinda Ardern, has just been in Europe initiating an international agreement to get social media hateful things restricted, so I can be proud of her for that too now,
reply by Jesse James Doty on 16-May-2019
Yes. I have been following the news recently, about your prime minister, and I approve and admire the actions she is taking to end hateful violence, not only in your country but, internationally, as well.

Really enjoyed reading about your beautiful country - have not had the chance to visit yet !! Love your description 'squiggle at the end of the world' but reading on it's quite an influential squiggle ! Love the item about the Albatross

We love our albatrosses, such majestic birds. I hope you get a chance to visit NZ; it has so much to offer as a visitor experience.
