Being a parent for 50 years and a teacher for 35 years, I have felt that the biggest influence on teenagers are their parents. Like the saying, "We become our parents". For the most part, I believe this is true. But keep in mind, there's always the exception to the rule. Children reach a certain age, the teenage years, and we only have so much control, so much influence on them. Best wishes.

The alarming, rising rate of teen suicide in the United States is most definitely a genuine concern, Lance.
Counseling, while helpful, is not the cure all, fix all to this dilemma.
Many kids do not have a healthy situation in the home as the rate of single parents is also on the upswing.
My best friend in high school was what's known as a "cutter."
And while his parents did have him meet with a therapist twice a week, it simply wasn't enough.
His father, being an ordained minister, the religious route proved futile as well.
In December of 1975, his parents went to Gatlinburg, Tennessee for a weekend skiing trip.
He refused to go.
He'd been showing marked improvement, or so they thought, so they felt it was safe for him to be left alone.
In reality, all he did was disguise his cutting better, slicing the flesh between his toes and underarms.
On December 16, 1975, he drew himself a hot bath, downed an entire bottle of Valium then slit his wrists vertically so there would be no hope of saving him should the pills fail.
There was no note, nor was there any indication he was planning to end his life.
His parents found him the following day, his life's blood bled out in the water and on the bathroom floor.
He was buried on a rainy Wednesday afternoon in Memorial Gardens Cemetery, Dayton, Ohio.
He was only fifteen years old.
Your well written Nonet caused the memories to come rushing back as I read it.
I wish we'd been able to do more and feel we all failed him in some way, everyday.
Best of luck to you in the contest.
God bless,

HI Vance, that is so much the problem today...
no one is looking...or hearing their cries...
we live in a very scary time...parents have to
work to make the bills...so kids run the wrong paths...
and friends don't talk to each other anymore...it's a
quick look on your cell phone...and who's really seeing
that your in pain...your poem has a great message...
very well written Nonet form...and your picture says it all...love your poem...love Linda xxoo

It's a very cold place - the world out there. I never agreed with parents who said "the minute he turns 18, he's outa' here." - nonsense. The world's also a hard place. And growing harder to survive.
you say it well with your poem.
hugs and prayer and trusting in God - the answer.

Hi Lance, That's a nice little Nonet entry for the contest. It calls attention to another of the things that we've missed in the busyness of our lives of social media and video games these days. We've missed what's going on with our kids. They're slipping through our fingers and the Bible doesn't have a lot to do with it. I think a lot of it is the economy. When households could exist on one income, life was better. Someone was home to take care of the kids and keep them in line. Someone was there for them. Now, nobody's home because if everyone isn't working all the time, nobody eats. People fall through the cracks.

That is a powerful message! It's too easy to get in with the wrong crowd and led down a path of destruction with drugs and alcohol. If they realize they aren't the only ones who feel the way they do. They need a helping hand before they think suicide is the only way out!

This is a very well written Nonet poem you have penned about teenagers and how suicide happens too often. You used very good words. And as you mentioned it should be hugs and not drugs. Blessings Teri
