Dear Kim, I love the volunteering hands that are raised and working together. You must volunteer at a lot of different places. I did too - my latest is at a local theater where they perform plays, and I volunteered to read for the blind, I volunteered at different hospitals in my area, also I was a tax greeter. Good luck in the contest. Donna P.S. Can you enter one of the other contests and also use it as a NaPoWriMo entry? e.g. the Mother's Day contest or Write a story in a poem.

Hi Donna -
Yes, you may enter any contest and use it as your NaPoWriMo selection for the day. Just be sure that when you post your piece, you do it through the normal contest entry portal. Then go into your portfolio and add it to your NaPoWriMo book afterward. If you are entering a blind contest (as opposed to a site contest like those you listed) then it is best to not add to your NaPoWriMo book until after the judging is over, so as not to reveal your identity.
Currently, most of my volunteer efforts are as a member of the board of directors for the Face-Off Club, which is the booster club for the Alaska Nanook Hockey team at UAF (University of Alaska-Fairbanks) I handle all of the merchandise and run the Face-Off Club table at our home games. This includes organizing many fundraisers to support the team.
In the past I've also helped with food drives at Thanksgiving for our local food bank, and I was the volunteer coordinator for my previous employer. I've volunteered for Relay for Life (American Cancer Society), March of Dimes (March for Babies), MDA (Muscular Dystrophy Association) and raised money for With All Your Heart, which is in conjunction with our local hospital foundation. With All Your Heart was started by one of our former hockey players in honor of his Dad and raises funds for the Harry and Sally Porter Heart Center at the Fairbanks Memorial Hospital. And, I've participated in the Bowl for Kids Sake to raise money for Big Brothers, Big Sisters here in Fairbanks.
Volunteering is near and dear to me, always. :)
Kim

Excellent cinquain and I like your title too, "Effect a Change." The great thing about volunteering is that not only do we change lives for others, it changes us, too!

Hi Helen,
YES! I think everyone should get to experience volunteering from a young age, perhaps that would inspire more of our youth giving back as adults. Thanks!

Sometimes I find that keepng up with you really stretches me. Lol.
without
those grateful folk,
those people who receive,
all gifts would be nought but a joke,
no doubt!

This was a good piece, Dovey. And it was a nice message as well. Just a few hours of your time can make the biggest difference in the world. Good job.

A very well-written Cinquain poem about the effect of change and the good-hearted people who choose to give instead of receiving and bless everyone each day.

Nice cinquain poem. I like the photo selection it adds dimensions and clarity to your message. I can see this as a commercial to target volunteers for nonprofits organizations. Excellent work. Good luck in the contest

I enjoyed your cinquain poem and it is so true. If we are to end poverty, homelessness, unemployment, everyone especially the rich, need to give as much as they receive. Wouldn't it be lovely if money raised to end starvation and disease in a Africa went towards feeding the starving and teaching them to grow their own food, instead of into admin funds! PM
