Hi Brett. This is excellent and a timely topic. Having flown for Pan American Airways internationally back in the '60's as a flight attendant, pilots were hired directly from their service in the military. They had plenty of experience and were glomed up by the commercial airlines who wanted them. Those pilots stayed until retirement so others desirous of moving up to captain had a long wait. When I left the airline, I worked the other side of the coin for the FAA. Most accidents at that time were deemed to be "pilot error."

You're right about fewer people in the cockpit. When I was flying there were four--pilot, first officer (co-pilot), engineer, and navigator. The navigator used his charts to determine route. The navigator was eliminated when automatic navigation systems came into play.

From what I've read and from what I think will happen, artificial intelligence will replace humans in the cockpit--maybe one person to oversee the system--if necessary to override it.

Great job with this interesting and timely post.
Marilyn

I found this very interesting. I'm flying to S. Dakota next month. This gave me food for thought. I enjoyed it. the subject was excellent. The past two crashes has everyone uneasy about flying. Very well done. Please write more.
