Your poem is excellent. A terrible time because those men weren't supported properly by the military, politicians or the citizens of our country except for those who were/are patriotic. A miracle any of them came back with their lives and/or sanity. Marilyn

Hi Marilyn. I truly appreciate your reading POW/MIA. As you said, it was a miracle any came home with their sanity. JOHN McCain was one who did, a true American hero. Rod

Thank you for your tribute to military heroes plus for your service and sacrifice. Your speaking in the first person in this fictional account and rhymed quatrains added to the intensity of your message. Well done- Joan

Thank you, Joan, for sharing POW/MIA. I am glad you felt the first person POV added to the intensity as I had considered using the third person ?He.? Rod

Your poem really sums up the terrible hardships suffered as a captured soldier, physically and mentally, and then the dislocation from family upon his return. I saw the film "The Deerhunter" which was made in 1978. Your poem reminded me of that very impactful film. We had compulsory national service call-ups in Australia when the Vietnam War was on so it was a big issue there.

Hi Lisa. This poem was spiritually taxing because this was my generation. I wanted to do it right and pay the proper homage to men who sacrificed so much. I remember "The Deerhunter," the first realistic film about Vietnam. Many thanks for sharing. Rod

Sometimes we get a bit close to the action in our memories.

A very powerful reminder of the horrors of war, particularly a war like Vietnam. The soldiers in this war were never recognised. They were in every sense as heroic as those who served in World Wars 1 & 2.
Your poem tells the truth.

This is a very strong poem that expresses great pain and you tell your story well. it is a difficult thing whenyou think of the lives kept and lost in captivity of war, I think you captured this well and commend youfor tha. the rhyme kind of comes and goes making this a bit hard to follow with ease at some points but all in all I appreciate this in honor of our fallen past and present soldiers and I think this will be appreciated by many, Mancub

Thank you so much for sharing my homage to the POWs/MIAs of Vietnam. I am pleased you think I captured their story well. I tried a different rhyme scheme--ABCA whereas I usually use ABCB. Rod

As a glorified radio repairman in the Navy Security Group, I got to hear a lot of propaganda from enemy and target nations...we laughed at most of it, except prisoner statements, those made us mad...we knew how they had been obtained...excellent rhyming poem about our heroes...

Thank you so much for verifying my rendition of a POWs story. I truly wanted to pay homage to these men who sacrificed so much, often under great stress. Your story is interesting. I think this is the first time I have heard of the Navy Security Group. Have you written about what you heard and posted it on FS? Rod

This is a very honest look at this reality of war and the terrible struggles of those drafted. I do hope God rewards those that had to fight for us who are, almost unfairly, free today to live without the physical wars. But now our battles are with social pressures that kind of like a war without the battle equipment. So, although our physical wars have ceased, we are still a society at war. I do feel so much for these poor fellows that had to give up their lives, but in the end, we have a better world for their sacrifice so all we can do is be very very thankful and live our best on their behalf. A well written thought poem reflecting on their lives. A great tribute to those that fought in the war! Excellent!

For A work of fiction you did very well describing th experience. You obviously did some research. Just wondering when you did your research did you happen to come across the Code of Conduct military members are to adhere to in case of capture. The actions you described was a court martiable offense.

Thank you for your kind praise of my poem, Earl. Yes, I had to research the subject because I had not experienced any of this first-hand. I did read about the Code of Conduct enacted in 1955 after many American POWs in the Korean War were broken. I have not heard if any of those like the Speaker in my poem were ever court-martialed.

Your verse is very sobering and well-written. Vietnam was a terrible war which has had ongoing repercussions for thousands of those who fought there. Good luck in the contest.

Thank you so much for sharing POW/MIA, JUDY. Yes, it was meant to be a "sobering" story of what happened to over 2500 American soldiers in Vietnam. Rod

This is a gripping poem. The images are vividly brutal but given the context it is appropriate. The rhyme scheme does not distract, which is sometimes a problem with these types of poem. Nice work.
