This was a great story, Sal. I loved the way the little girl packed. Seems she was a responsible 8 year old after all. What really took me back was your use of the word Coca-cola. That reminded me of my grandparents. We visited them every Sunday and 3 o'clock was Coca-cola time. Thanks for the flashback. I loved the way the mother handled this situation. Great job.

Even your plan to run away was altruistic, as you thought doing so would lighten her burden. Her gentle kindness prompted you to stay long enough to realize how much you would have been missed, thus turning a potential trauma or even tragedy into family unity and gratitude. Your then sixteen-year-old brother's willingness to contribute to the family's support may later have been a factor in your recognition of Jackson as the soulmate you needed (and still have). Superb by all measures. Six stars are not enough for this one.

Thank you, dear George. I am glad you could appreciate my true story. I do mention my parents were divorced. My mother raised me single-handedly most of my life. My dad was an alcoholic. He abandoned us all when I was very young. My mom worked very hard to raise our family and to provide just food and covering. I miss her much and the wonderful mother she was.

Thank you so much for the outstanding review and sweetest comments. My mom was a gem. She really was a loved all of us. She worked sun up to sundown to provide for us after divorcing my alcoholic father. I actually thought I was helping by having one less mouth to feed. So you liked this.

Thank you so much for the excellent review and kind comments. I appreciate the encouragement. I alluded to the fact that my parents had divorced and my brother lived with us and worked a job. He was only 16. He helped support us as we were barely getting by. We ate a lot of breakfast for dinner because it was cheap, too. I wrote this from my eight year old perspective and my solution to support myself by myself. Love and being needed was the underlying theme for keeping me from leaving.

I'm sure everyone who reads this will remember the time they "ran away" - usually around age eight. In my case, my parents helped me pack, then sent my sister to follow after me as I made it all the way to 63rd Street (we lived on 61st) before turning back.
This is so Norman Rockwell - I love it, and the glimpse into familial ties and the mind of an 8 year-old it offers. It practically defines "home". Absolutely deserving of my last six.
