You told your story well, SL. I enjoyed reading it. I liked how
you shared the road to becoming a hospice nurse (I wouldn't
capitalize it). You and the patients under your care were lucky
to find each other. I know nursing isn't for everyone, but
everyone may need a nurse at some point.
Thanks for sharing, Jan

The only comment I'd have is that there's quite a lot of repetition, such as near the start when you use 'the patient' frequently even though we haven't changed subject, so 'they' would be sufficient.

That's a minor concern, though. You do a great job of letting us into your head to feel what you feel. I enjoyed following you on your journey of discovery and finding someone who inspired you.

Very nicely done.

Mike

Well, all I can say is that you turned into being a Hospice Nurse for all the right reasons. I'm looking forward to your next chapters. I agree, writing biography is not an easy task. All the best. Ulla:)))

An inspiring story. Loved to read these lines:

I have always been an emotional and spiritual individual, and can always tell when someone needs comfort. I just do my job without thought or hesitation. It just comes naturally.

I believe you are correct. This is your calling and your passion for your job comes through loud and clear in this chapter.

Notes:

The patient's breathing was very noisy and sounded very wet.

I think you could tighten this sentence up a little without losing any of the description. For example:

The patient's noisy breathing sounded very wet.

An unhappy nurse is a nurse that will become burnt out nurse.

This sentence appears to me to need the word 'a' added.

An unhappy nurse is a nurse that will become a burnt out nurse.

Or you could tighten it up by writing:

Unhappy nurses become burnt out nurses.

Just suggestions. I think you have a fine story here, and I am sure many people will enjoy reading of your experiences.
All the best,

I appreciate a look inside, I think the hospice I visited my grandmother in has been in the back of my mind ever since. that was 1972. you have to have such an open heart to do what you do, Sandra. but you must have to close it some out of self-preservation. I do want to thank you for writing this......................gary

I definitely don't want a burnt out nurse if I need a nurse that's for sure. I never thought of nursing being like a doctor and having to find your spot in the world of all the different categories. I like to see weird stuff like your bowel. I saw the intestines of someone, it was cool. My nephew kept his tonsils. I also saw those. It was cool. Someone told me I should have went and became the person that hands the surgeon the tools. I don't necessarily do anything but I'd be helping. Again, I don't think all they do is hand them the tools, I'm sure there's more involved. As they said there is schooling so I'm sure I'd need to know stuff. But it would be cool to see the insides of someone...you know as long as I don't have to touch the inners or cut anything

Thank you for your review and rating. No you don't want a burnt out nurse. You wouldn't know if the nurse is burnt out or not. It isn't something the patient would be able to figure out until a mistake is made.Thank you for reading.

This was very interesting, SL Morrical. I think hospice nurses are very special. I have known so many people who had them before they left this life. The families all appreciate the nurses and their comfort.

Very well done Sandra. I do agree with you that there is a calling and most people think it is the most horrible job a nurse can take. Like you I was not truly happy until I found hospice, therefore I can agree that it is a calling. I had spent many years in the various ICUs and although I was happier than I had been, it still did not fulfill me, then I found hospice- helping people to die well and comfortable. Great writing.

You are so welcome Sandra, I am now retired but I did 15 years in the ICUs and then the last 12 in hospice where I eventually made administrator and surprised them by insisting I carried a patient load, reduced of course. Before the ICU I had about 6 years fluttering around hopelessly. Glad you found your niche.

Hi SL,

I am happy to learn that you have chosen to write about your experiences as a hospice nurse! I believe you will bring great healing to many bereaved souls in sharing your experiences. As always, nothing here for me to suggest improving upon. Thanks for sharing your great work. Jan
