And the writer is so right, Dawn. It's a great start to a new book and as I understand it, you're actually writing it? Although, you appeared reluctant doing so. Great flash story. I liked it. All best.Ulla:)))

You did a good job with your contest entry, Dawn. The lines flow smoothly, the message is clear, and readers should understand the implications perhaps some in their own lives. Thanks for sharing and best wishes. Jan

This could be the beginning of a new book Dawn.It is a very interesting look into the life of an unhappy lady who laid it all on the line too many years only to finally give up. I love the line Twenty-plus years of false claims, of neglect and belittling, of looking the other way when others would claim an intimacy they did not own" Well done.
Nancy:)

    Ah, Nancy -- I'm busted! (LOL) I have too many novels 'on the go' but... This is actually intended as a companion piece to the poem, "Shades of Grey":

    Shades of Grey
    by Dawn Munro

    If you should ask me how I am today,
    I'd tell you that I'm fine; I'm doing well.
    But you should know that since you went away,
    I've been assigned a special kind of hell.

    I cannot breathe, still feeling you so near...
    I see you everywhere; I call your name.
    There's no clear danger, though at times I fear.
    My days, and nights will never be the same.

    As if you're close, I rush to point them out
    when simple things are lovely; then I cry.
    'No closure' makes me desperate to shout -
    to scream at you to simply tell me why...?

    There's always colour somewhere seeping through,
    but you were mostly right, and I was wrong.
    How many times we argued points of view,
    though you would not concede, unless a throng

    would back me; saying you should listen well,
    that I appealed to plain, old, common sense.
    Instead, consigned to unjust, living hell,
    I'd be the one to drop all my defence.

    There's no such thing as only black and white!
    Now I will lie - you don't believe the truth.
    And leaving as you did just wasn't right;
    at least you could have left me my own youth,

    not stayed with me to rob us both of love,
    when you were never satisfied with us.
    You thought I didn't care, and God above
    knows I created more than one small fuss

    when you would not protect me - take my side.
    Why do you think I did that, anyway?
    But cowards always find a way to hide
    their black and white behind a peaceful grey.

    I don't deserve to suffer as I am.
    You should have made me know there was no hope.
    But then, perhaps, you didn't give a damn,
    and all I spoke was never more than trope...

    ~~~ Thanks, friend, Nancy. I'm glad you liked it. :)
A very well-written two hundred word flash fiction. We often have secrets that only we know and that is the very best way to keep them safe. As soon as we tell someone those secrets it is no longer a secret.
Once we allow ourselves to be abused in any way, it gets easier with every concession.
You stated a perfect idea in this line alone. Well written and true?
Dawn, this is a reflective read. It allows the reader to feel the sense of regret, self doubt and second guessing on the decision to move onto higher ground. Staying in hiding is never the answer to being free. I did ponder the title though - A Drop of Magenta - and wondered where that fit in.
Good luck on this thought provoking read. ~DD
Just under 200 words...great job! This little slice of life does an excellent job of depicting the traps women (and men) can step into when desiring a relationship. The blinders we wear, the things we ignore to keep the peace and our false worlds of fulfillment. Enjoyed!
Excellent flash fiction and so true that giving in to abuse once can be like an addiction and lead down a slippery slope into unacceptable tolerance of an abusive situation.
Nicely written indeed. :)
As usual I enjoyed this short story. Sounds like this guy was a jerk from start to finish. I can see where you had more to lose than to gain. Terrible how some people treat others. Thanks for sharing, God bless always.
