Well, here we go. I do feel like the story is just beginning. This chapter reveals so much. I've read it several times. Each time I see something that I overlooked. I now know the meaning of "The Refuge" and why Maggie is being brought here. I hope that Rosemary's wards remain firm or that Maggie has some of her own.
This is fascinating. Your characters and their animals are each so interesting.

Well, here we go. I do feel like the story is just beginning. This chapter reveals so much. I've read it several times. Each time I see something that I overlooked. I now know the meaning of "The Refuge" and why Maggie is being brought here. I hope that Rosemary's wards remain firm or that Maggie has some of her own.
This is fascinating. Your characters and their animals are each so interesting.

I loved the tension you build between the bitch and Peadar. The conversational tone worked well, and though I did get confused when Demetrius was suddenly there, I was able to re-orient myself with a second read.
a few notes for your consideration:
'(A) Deep puff on the pipe as his mind continued to wander.' The missing article in this sentence made the sentence interrupt the flow for me.
'Gods be damned, but shewas is beautiful!' It seems he would be speaking in present tense, and so 'is' is more appropriate here.
