I enjoyed this read, Chip Kuzborski. I think you really captured the theme perfectly in this piece. Great flow and imagery as well. Good job and good luck in the contest.

Lol a text to a landline. I've never tried to do that. I've had people try to fax to my landline...nothing could be worse than hearing your phone ring, picking up the receiver and hearing a bunch of electronic whirs and whistles.

It's sad to think that our cell phones are laughing at us, but can we really blame them? Your descriptions of how carried away we are with our electronic devices are very accurate (particularly that we're "Beholden to an umbilical tether"), and you used very well-chosen rhymes to make your points. I think you did an excellent job of skewering our electronic device fixation. The only line with which I slightly disagree is the one stating that "Our reliance is borderline obscene." I think we crossed that border long ago! ;-)

I thought you would. If you get a chance, please read my poem "The Cell Phone Ate My Child," which I'd entered in a previous contest. You'll see that you and I are on the same page.

I love this poem and I especially love the last line. Its comforting knowing I'm not the only one made uncomfortable by generation's dependency on cell phones. I realized my own dependency when I was using GPS in my small hometown every time I got in my car, "just in case I make a wrong turn". I'm no compass but I can definitely say I'm more aware of my surroundings now that ive gotten "lost" a couple times.

Hi Jane, thanks for the review! Believe me, I poke fun but am equally complicit at times and need to check myself. If I use Siri for directions I tend to follow blindly and never commit them to memory, which is frustrating.

I used to go to lunch with a guy every Saturday. I stopped going because he was always on his cellphone. It was like eating alone. This is an excellent contest entry.

Thanks for the4 review, Jan! And yes, I did see that episode, pretty alarming.

Hi Chip,
I was teaching abnormal psych at a college around the time that aired and had the kids read it. Most expressed shock and horror at the way our minds are consistently manipulated for greed. (A great public service 60 Minutes has done with that segment! They should get an award for that, in my opinion. Doubt the MSM (mainstream media) even talked about it, sadly.
I enjoyed your read -- keep writing!

Oh the mayhem of cell phones. A plague on the hold they have on everyone -- down to our young grandchildren. These little ones tied to a tablet and their "shows". Another older grandson with a watch that does everything but wash dishes. Even my husband sits staring at his slippery little machine, reading email or playing solitaire. I'll stick to my flip-top phone. With it I make phone calls.
Good look at the problem (I think it's a problem) -- and the picture you chose is sure appropriate.

Haha - this was fun to read and you did a good job capturing the obsession that the cell phone has become. 'borderline obscene' I like that phrase. Very entertaining, Lou
