Thank you for this wonderful account of your brave stepbrother. I can't imagine surviving all that horror from the war and exposure to those chemicals. I liked that he journaled and trusted God to read those prayers!

Thank you for the excellent review and kind comments. He was a special one. Chuck Norris paid tribute to him by providing a photo of his gravestone on Find A Grave. He died in 1984 at 33 years of age.

this is a fascinating read, Sal. as realistic as it gets. I was fourteen in '72. it was the summer that my life changed its direction, but that is another story. I have a vivid memory of my friends older brothers coming back with stories of standing in chest-high swamps for days at a time. even sleeping that way. they all had white scars on their torsos, they called it jungle rot. I grew up on a college campus and I remember how cruel it was that these heroes had to keep such a low profile. they really didn't need any more trouble. I want to thank your step-brother, Steve, posthumously for his service. we don't forget............meeshu

Thank you so much, Meeshu. I will receive the thanks on his behalf. My mother and stepfather divorced in 1975 and Steve had long since moved to Washington State. Most all of his family are dead, except for one brother, and hopefully, his sons. I do not even know about the whereabouts of his third wife. He died in 1984 at 34 years old. I appreciate your outstanding review of my recollections.
    All my best, Sal

Very sad this story of time spent in Viet Nam. I am a Viet Nam vet who lost my oldest brother to Agent Orange. His body would break out in boils from this terrible thing. Good discripton of what it was like to be in Viet Nam. God bless.

Thank you so much for the outstanding review and insightful comments. So many suffered and died from the ravages of war and this horrible herbicide. He was a kind man who served and cared for others. He is missed.

This is so well told, Sally. I don't like to read of the horrors of war, but it was your story, so I read on. You have a good knack for telling stories. I knew that I would like this one. And, I did. I learned a lot as well. I didn't know much about agent orange. Didn't know it was in the water that you always see the soldiers wading through. Didn't know the problem with the throat.
Anyway, I'm glad that I read it. Thank you for sharing.

Thank you so much for the excellent review and encouragement. I kept it rated G for generally everyone. It can really trigger some sad things for service members and I did not want to do that or disparage anyone. He was a fine man and talked openly to us all about what was going on. He told us about his basic training and all the gross stuff he ate in the jungle of Vietnam at the dinner table! My mom was horrified at times. So glad you stopped by and we?re able to appreciate my tribute.

Salute! I remember the hour, the moments, and the many I served with however, war stories is something I leave alone. Every time I go to the VA , I remember when and try and sit alone. Knew to many who died from Agent Orange. Something we try and forget. Your character sounds as many. Thank you for sharing your heart. We were soldiers.

Thank you for your service. I hope this wasn?t too painful for you to take in. I kept it rated ?G? for generally everyone. I don?t know how all you served in such difficult circumstances, but I?m thankful for your service every day of my life. This was truly a war many of us do not understand, but appreciate always the sacrifices made. Thank you again so much for your service. All my best, Sally

This is memory of a hellish war that ruined so many men, mentally and physically. I cannot express enough my gratitude for their service. My husband was one of the ones never the same again. You have written a harrowing tale here, and done it splendidly. Blessings

I am sorry about your brother. It's hard when you loose siblings. I lost my brother, Hal to Hepetitis C. He had several operations on his knee back in the 70's before they checked for blood diseases. My next door neighbor is a veteran and was exposed to Agent Orange while overseas. She just had throat surgery this past Friday and they are checking for cancer. Katy

I hate to say I enjoyed this because the connotation is happiness and this was too bittersweet for that. War is hell but the soldiers aren't devils as this demonstrates. Well written.

This was a mean and sad war with no end to the satisfaction on anyone's side. Our boys got treated like dirt when they returned and agent orange took to many people.

Thank you, dear Barbara. They were mistreated as a whole. Chuck Norris actually did the photo tribute on Find A Grave for Steve. He must do this as a tribute to those who served in an outstanding way. He definitely served with honor. A tough situation all the way around.
    All my best,

Hi, Sal. This seems like something out of a movie to be honest:

Our last mission was the most successful to date--rescuing 10 prisoners of war. One casualty died in my arms as I was carrying him from the shack where he was being held for interrogations to safety. He was beaten and tortured beyond recognition by the Vietcong. He whispered to me and asked if I would tell his young wife how much he loved her. I have to remember him and not forget --that is why I fight this godforsaken war."

I am a bit confused with this one. You have it listed as Non-fiction is that right? I saw your note at the bottom and all of the chronicled posts do not sound true. Guys I know in the Marines who served in nam don't even like to discuss their time served there, much less heroics.

Bless you, my friend. Bob

Thank you so much for the excellent review and insightful comments. I appreciate you stopping by. This is true as it gets as this is compiled from letters and conversations with my brother. Since we have a military family background, we openly discussed all kinds of things during family time. He would tell us about all the disgusting things he ate, how he trained, how he was skilled in everything that he did and did not do. Not all soldiers kept everything in. He did not, but he seemed to be relieved to speak of such things. Chuck Norris has pictured his gravestone on Find A Grave to be honored. Possibly, he inspired Mr. Norris and his films. Who knows. He died in 1984 at 33 years old.
    All my best,
