Where to begin? The paragraphs where you describe the house are professional-grade writing - they flow, feature original imagery (seaweed trying to strangle a Great White), great word choices ("patinated" brass, "mottled" with bird droppings, "macrame'd" together by spider webs) it's obvious a lot of thought went into crafting this beautiful story.

The story itself is lovely - it speaks to the drama of everyday life - the convergence of the two crises; the one in Annie's life, and the one in the live of the family she teaches - in such a way that there is mutual help and affirmation is heartwarming.

I'll bet there are lots of us that played "Heart and Soul" with their children (in my case, that's about the limit of my piano skills - my children surpassed me at an early age). Experiences like that, or simply singing lullabies to your children, give us a glimpse how music can connect parents and children - your last line is so poignant.

And lastly, I had never heard the quote from your author's not before - "music is the sound our feelings make" - wonderful!

Thank you for all the heart and guidance that went into this review. It helps enormously.
The sixth star is the icing on the cake. Thank you for your generosity in both areas today.

And PS - it's never too late to take piano lessons. I have ten grown-ups who take lessons, and they're fantastic because they're so MOTIVATED!!

This is a lovely story. Some great imagery here:

'There were dozens of spindles beneath the majestic oak banister, but each was macrame'd to its closest neighbor with spider webs' - Excellent

' its keys like a derelict's smile, wedged into a corner' clever simile.

Despite your hints about the teacher's 'special brand of piano lessons', I didn't see the little twist coming at all. So sweet that she would help this man play with no hands. A well-written, touching tale.

Hi Rachelle,

Whew! This story took my breath away and hou have me typing through misty eyes.

Absolutely exceptional -- well worthy of a 6er, but I have none to award.

You are a truly gifted author! Your use of metaphors is excellent. And I love the line about Rose's eyes being filled with memories of her son.

Thank you so much for sharing,

Jan

Hi, Rachelle. Yet another wonderful piece of writing, my friend: What a wonderful story. Very worthy of six or even ten stars but unfortunately I have to spread them around, Rachelle. Just know that I lke your writing very much indeed.

Passages like this with great imagery are key and you have it, my friend: "Annie turned her back on her reflection. "May I ask what's motivating you to do this? I'm always intrigued when adults want to resume lessons."

And More here: "The sills and window panes were mottled with bird droppings, and two corners even housed substantial nests. The steps, although spectacular in their swirls of black and white marble, were being overtaken by ivy that looked like seaweed trying to strangle a Great White."

Wonderful metaphor:: ("bobbing along on a sea of complacency.")
And this: ".........before the immense door moaned open."

Bless you, my friend. :) Bob

This has shaken me to my core. Exquisite writing that takes the heart to levels of feelings so precious. This is beautiful and encourages the reader to explore the level of their own life. The ending just did me in...so many tears, so touching. I could see those pincers, have seen them before. You gave me a fantastic read and much to think about.

You've packed a very powerful punch at the end. I thought this was very well written. I did wonder about the sentence: I could always reel him back in if I'd play the piano. I might have put 'I could always reel him back in if I played the piano' but it's probably just a matter of opinion. Thanks for an enjoyable read.

Here's Six Stars for this wondrous short story, but you're deserving of a constellation. I see in your profile that you teach music, so I imagine this story came from a corner of your soul. Your character and scene descriptions were superb. Learning to play piano has been on my bucket list for a while. 2019 may be the year. Thanks for sharing.

Wow, Stephanie!! Six stars - and the urging of a constellation? You are as sweet and encouraging as Life gets. Thank you.

This story was formed when I was walking past the The Best House in Town - that does, indeed, have a picture window. But I'm afraid everything else was my imagination at work.

I hope you go for that bucket list goal, Stephanie! I have about ten adult students, and I love them all. (They always practice, they are very positive and upbeat, and they give one hundred percent!)

A very well-written heartfelt story. The things we love can become a bore sometimes when we keep doing it over and over and not with the passion we are used to, until something heartbreaking happens and we remember why we are doing the things we love to do.
