Sally, your story is riveting and heart-tugging. I like your simple POV. and your chronological relating. I like the detail you offer about your worn out shoes. I think your story might benefit from other such small details--things that might have seemed bigger to the small child you were.
Also, you rely quite heavily on 'telling', and occasionally lapse into a passive voice.
I hope you'll work on these aspects.

Hi, Sal,

Your tale is too familiar and too common these days. I wish someone could find a cure for alcoholism. Too many drinkers refuse to go into a twelve step program - they want a quick fix.

My dad's alcoholism ruined our lives in so many ways. We are all battle-scarred, and my brother and sister refuse to discuss the past. So, I stew in my own thoughts, and the result is over-powering darkness.

Let's just say, I've learned to not spend a lot of time there,

Thank you for the excellent review and insightful comments. All my siblings have struggled with alcoholism and I alone have escaped its evil grasp. I have never taken a drink of alcohol. I cook with it and that?s it for me. I can completely relate to anyone who has lived through this. My victory is in Christ alone. He has helped me be the person I want to be and wanted for a parent and grandparent. My mom drank socially and enjoyed an occasional beer after she did yard work. I never saw her drunk or out of control though. She had a reverent fear of it?s controlling power to destroy. So do I.

Jesus is the cure of every ill and every dark thing. I encourage you to take those dark musings to him and hand them over. Be rid of them forever. You?ll be glad you did.

Nice work up for this story and it is true money don't by love. Love is what's in your heart and what you can share with the ne you love. Money pays bills is all but you can't feel the love from it only the harsh reality.
