Please check how Alfred Hitchcock made the infamous shower scene in Psycho. There is clever use of black and white, light and shadow, and we never actually see the knife touch the victim.

Viewed frame by frame, it can seem unconvincing, but viewed in the movie theater, it still shocks audiences.

Good afternoon, Dean

Can't argue with the list. I've seen all the films you listed. I don't know, it could have been my age at the time, but I found Clockwork Orange a tad disturbing. Alien would be my number one pick.

Take care and stay safe,

Ray

Yes, Clockwork Orange was pretty disturbing, Ray.
It's just a bit too far-fetched for my tastes.
    Thanks for reading.

Misery, one of my all-time favorite films, not so much for the scare factor but for the way it built to the so many actions of a "Fan' and or love and or need, Alien is also up there, thanks for sharing****kahpot

These are all great movies. I have to agree with what you wrote about them. I just love the black and white Night of the Living Dead. "There coming to get you Barbara." Interesting insight. Oh by the way I'm your number one fan LOL.

    A-a-a-a-e-e-eeeeeeeeeeeiiii!!!
    Heh-heh-heh...
I really like the Night of the Living Dead remake too, Jan.
But it was the original that put horror in the mainstream movie medium.
Thanks very much for reading my list and for the...uh... comment concerning fandom as well. Ahem...

Hi, Dean,

Not all surprised about your list - was surprised we have so many in common. However, I saw Exorcist in the theatre back in '76. Went to an old theatre in NYC. You had to walk down a bunch of stairs, so you felt like you were in a cave. Walking out was horrifying. I didn't scream in the theatre, but when my boyfriend brushed against my leg in the car on the way home, I started screaming and it took some time to calm down.

Thank you for sharing your list,

~patty~

Yeah, that film more than any other (besides the shower scene in Hitchcok's PSYCHO, of corpse) had a profound and lasting impact on those who were brave enough to see the it.
Thanks for checking out my list, Patty.
I appreciate you adding your two-cents worth!

I loved all of your choices, Dean. I've heard of The Sentinel, but don't recall ever seeing it. I am a sucker for campy horror like The Abominable Dr. Phibes (Vincent Price), Dusk to Dawn (Quentin Tarantino), Fright Night (Roddy McDowall), Re-Annimator (from an HP Lovecraft story) and Slither (Nathan Fillion).

I like the films you mentioned a lot too, Bill.
Especially From Dusk 'Til Dawn. Tarantino is one of my favorite directors. I enjoy all of his movies.
But I had to try to whittle it down to just ten.
Whatever Happened to Baby Jane, The Fly (both the old version as well as the new), The Haunting of Hell House, Rabid, starring Ivory Soap gal turned Porn Star, Marilyn Chambers, Piranha, and many more I could have added to my list.
    Thanks for checking this out.

Definitely some classic horror flicks you mentioned! Another modern day one that is entertaining to watch is Fright Night. Have you ever seen Nightmares, four tales of terror? I don't think I've seen Full Metal Jacket and I'm a bit foggy on The Sentinel, but Jaws, Halloween and Psycho you can never get tired of seeing over and over again. I like your skeleton, how it tip toes across the screen and spells your name! By the way, the photo you use for yourself with the big spider on the hat, where did that come from?

Thanks for checking my list out, Kathleen.
    I really appreciate it.
Full Metal Jacket is categorized as a war movie. It follows a group of Vietnam recruits from basic training to hard-fought battles in the city of Wei and the Tet Offensive.
    It is truly horrifying!
My profile picture comes from a cartoon caricature I had made at a carnival that came to town.
I asked the artist, 'Hey, man. Can you make me look like Jack the Ripper?'
He said, "Sure, have a seat.", and that is what he came up with.
Where he got the idea for the spider I was kind of afraid to ask, heh-heh-heh...
    Thanks so much again.

    This is me today.
That's my daughter, Chelsea, my 17-year-old Chihuahua (and my best friend in the whole world, Gidget), and our two miniature dachshunds, Tippy and Frank E. Furter, there with me.

Awe, thank you for sharing! What a great picture of you, your daughter and your babies!!! Love all the names of your doggies too! I have two cats and you'll appreciate the name of my black cat, it's Dracoola not only because he is all black but he has extra long fangs like Dracula but he's 'cool'! My other baby is a black and white cat named Sebastian and actually his middle name is Valentine because he is such a sweet heart! I love all animals!

You know what amazes me, Dean, I didn't realize just how many horror films I've seen. The only three that I haven't seen from your list are: #7, 9 & 10.

Now, this doesn't mean that I'm interested in any of the modern day horror flicks. It just surprised me how many I actually have watched and enjoyed, aside from the gory parts. Psycho, of course, is a classic. Misery was brilliant and definitely held my attention. Hugs, Lou

Those films you mentioned, now those are true horror films, Lou.
I detest sexploitation films filled with buckets of blood and gore. That's not horror to me, merely splatter porn.
But films like Cujo, MISERY, Schindler's List (which I almost included in my top 10) ...THAT is horror!
    Thanks so much for reading.

Cheers, Dean;
>Like some of the authors and a few of the directors standing by themselves and not in coordinating with the movies involved in your writing. I do like, the best of them all, of "Psycho, directed by Alfred Hitchcock.
>I can do without Stephen King's embellishment if he could tone it down I'd lkie it better. Like the one you wrote, Living in the Golden Years. Where the reading was much better than the movie which is usually the case.
> Thanks for sharing and take care and have a good one.

An interesting list of movies. I've seen them all, but The Sentinel. I was surprised by a few notable exceptions, based on your predilections: The Birds, The Shining, and Psycho.

I loved Stephen King's novel, The Shining, Tom. But I felt director Stanley Kubrick's film version was goofy.
Psycho I mentioned as one of my favorites, and The Birds, I saw the film when I was about ten.
    I thought it was funny.
Thanks very much for reading my list.
