Your stories truly make me want to want to visit Australia, Lisa. It is easy for me to visualize your yard with Dad's garden and Mom's birdbath. I can also see her in the kitchen baking all those yummy scones and desserts. I have no trouble seeing you pick blackberries by your stream. Didn't need to hear about Jeff puking though. All in all, YOUR FAMILY HAD FUN TOGETHER. That theme really comes out in this story. Rod

Thanks for your comments Rod. Yes we did have fun together, but I do remember it as a time of great sadness too. In my blackberry story there should have been another brother, Terry, but he died when he was 11 and I was 10. And only a few years later my Mum died when I was 15. So I do try and concentrate on the fun memories of my family... I am adopted as well, so that adds another dimension into the mix. All in all, rich territory for creative exploration of identity.

?rich territory for creative exploration of identity.? How many people can claim that? You are lucky! Lisa. Keep mining that territory. Rod

Your story would make an excellent article for your regional chamber of commerce, Lisa May.

I found it to be an engrossing read. The appetizing recollections of home-grown fruits and veggies, and your mum's concoctions, your colorful mini-travelogue, tidbits on Aussie wildlife and ancient history, and of course, the eventful blackberry expedition, were all very engaging.

Thanks so much for your review. I didn't understand what you meant by the chamber of commerce?

I assumed the term was used throughout the free world, I guess not. You probably have something similar down there, Lisa May. It's an association that promotes, for the benefit of local businesses, the virtues of the region.

    G'day, mate.

Yes we do have chambers of commerce, but I think my story is too removed from the present day and the valley we went to is no longer accessible. Ah, nostalgia.

Well, adults will enjoy this story as well. I enjoyed the story.

I love the nostalgic memories of family picnic to collect the blackberries. These are the types of memories that forever live.

Perhaps your brother was allergic to blackberries or over ate. By the way, in America, we use vomiting, throwing up, and puking.

There were a few places in the story where you changed the pronouns and referenced the reader as "you." However, it did not distract from the read.

I never heard of chutney. What is that?

After reading your well-written story, I am craving blackberry jam.

Thanks very much for your review. I agree that many childhood stories take on a life of their own.
Here is a quick definition for you: Generally speaking, a relish is made with grated or cut up vegetables or fruit , while a chutney is almost always made with mainly fruit. ... It is a spicy and aromatic condiment that contains fruit, sugar, vinegar and a whole array of spices. Chutneys can vary in texture from being smooth to rather chunky and coarse.
