This is a beautiful story. There is sadness but redemption also.
Your author notes add much to the understanding of the poem,
yet the poem stands on its own and has great emotional impact.
thanks for sharing your family's story.
Good luck in the contest.

A strong statement, sorry about your uncle a good tribute, finding other delighting views and opinions. Chicken running around pen knowing the fact not men but governments. Only thing Jesus promises to destroy. All in my opinion.

In my opinion, oh, my goodness, Diane, what a stunning write, narrated in such detailed emotional substance. While a tribute to your father and uncle, it is a miraculous expression of forgiveness and a memorial to all those who served and continue to serve in police actions, as well as war. It is heartfelt and a testament to ordinary men, who are anything but ordinary, and who prove their greatness quietly and with humility...

Good Morning, Eve!
So very pleased that you enjoyed my offering.
I wrote this primarily for my children and their children. The greatest fear is that we forget...
Thank you for your excellent rating and thoughtful review.
Be well,

You are so welcome, Diane - your poem was particularly special to me because of my own family - my stepfather was in the Air Force as a career man in Special Services, and my brother served in Viet Nam, both heroes to me. None of us will forget, especially with your type of historical tribute. Thank you, on behalf of us all...Eve

Wonderful and amazing poem, and true story, of your father and his brother. The sunrise photo is lovely. Your piece is heartrending and touching, in ways that are hard to express. The lessons your family learned of healing, are lessons for all of us, to do the same. This is so well written in its phrasing and rhymes. The flow and meter are excellent. The tender story you tell, not only in your poem but, in your Author's notes, as well, is important historically, and personally for you, as well as, for us. I read with great interest, the historical account of the Japanese 'Hell' ship, and was shaken to find out the results of your uncle's demise under such Hellish circumstances. To endure what he endured, for so long, is honorable, and I am glad that he won, the Purple Heart Medal, posthumously. I could go on and on but, suffice to say, that this is the best poem, story, message, and lesson, I have read in a long time. Thank you so much for sharing this wonderful biography of your father and uncle.
Take care, Jesse

Good Morning, Jesse,
What a thoughtful and beautiful review.
I am honored by your exceptional rating and heartfelt thoughts.
I wrote this offering for my children and their future children. We simply must not forget.
I realize now that I should have mentioned my mother directly in the poem as it was she who suggested to my father that our family host a Japanese exchange student...
Thank you again, Jesse!

Hello Diane
I agree this is something that your children's children must not forget. Your mother is a wise woman to suggest the healing process of hosting a Japanese exchange student. I am so glad you shared this offering with us at Fan Story. We all can learn to forgive and heal.

We all must move forward and not dwell in the past and forgive others. War is hell and we have to separate the good from the bad times. So glad the girl got to come to spend time with you all so you all could both heal.

Virtual Six, Diane! I think this is will do well in the contest. It's a moving story about your brave uncle and oh, the horror those young men faced in such cruel conditions. My own ancester suffered under Japanese rule over Korea. But I like how you bring in forgiveness and the acceptance of the young Japanese woman. I only wonder who she is to your family - she's introduced suddenly.

Hello Helen!
Thank you ever so much for the excellent rating and thoughtful review.
My mother came home one day and shared with my father and me that she thought our family should host an exchange student for the upcoming school year. And then she said, "She's Japanese." At seventeen, I was a bit horrified, knowing what I did about my uncle. My father was silent for a few moments, and then he said the words have have become for me the defining words of forgiveness, "It is time that we all heal." Natsumi Murakami lived with us for an entire year; my father came to love her as one of his own daughters, and I loved her as a sister...
Thank you again, Helen...

This is an amazing and beautiful story of the strength of the human spirit against all odds - and the power of forgiveness. I feel your family's pain and admire their courage and principles. Kudos to you for sharing these uplifting sentiments in a poem. Well done.
