Hi Bill ,
a captivating and sweet image of children fully engaged in the wonder of the written word.
A fine subject choice and wonderful advice.
It would be such a travesty to lose these skills of literacy.
Blessings
Shirley

I say Amen! What happened to the readers of scholarly works? Why is it so much effort when it's supposed to be fun?
10 syllable lines/short/long (vice versa)/ababcdcdefefgg/assonance rhymes/9th line twist/ending couplet.
I really love the couplet! Darling photo fits theme well with eager faces.
Enjoyed!

Brilliant, Bill. I love it. And how true this is. People have stopped reading and as a result have forgotten rules of writing. To make it worse, schools stopped teaching language arts and grammar forty years ago!!! Why? It's insane. MS Word grammar check has ERRORS. Those people didn't know the correct rules either, so they passed on common mistakes. Don't get me started.

Thank you, Phyllis, for your terrific response. After some pushback from some modern education supporters, I changed ?the dumbest? generation? to ?a shallow?. This is probably more aligned with my argument.

Hear, Hear, Bill. seems we have to remind every generation to read. I had a teacher tell me I was wasting my time listening to Dylan when I could be reading. bad example, he went on to become a busboy at IHOP. really great write............meeshu

Thanks, meeshu, for giving this a look. I guess a position at IHOP was blowing in the wind.

Did you love to read as a child? I did and of course I still love to read. It seems so true when you say so few are entertained by the written word. Sad, but true. That is more incentive for people like us to write, perhaps it will spark an interest for someone. Great poem.

Thank you, TA, for giving this a look. My mom read to me, she encouraged me to write, and I have been encouraged to do both all my life.

Your sonnet hits the problem on the head. I went to college in my mid 30s and a professor told the kids they were probably the first generation of Americans who wouldnt do as good as their parents, now those kids are raising the next generation which seems to be going more towards cavemen IQs. Nice job rhyming, making sense, and invoking emotions within the reader.

Thank you, Earl. I have taken the indictment edge off a bit and changed ?the dumbest? to ?a shallow? generation.

This is a wonderful sonnet, Bill. It has a great theme as well as rhyming and flow. The image of the kids is super and I wondered if they were relatives, then I saw the footnote. Good luck in the contest. Marilyn

AMEN, Bill. Your last two lines I believe in 100%!
I am so concerned about these Millennials...their lack of interest in anything beyond their cell phones. Schools are so dependent on technology and not true learning...no need to learn boring history, memorize, facts/figures outdated--just Google everything! Kids cannot tell time unless it's digital. I have talked to kids in my classroom who do not know the months of the year in order... I could go on and on... I'm concerned. I try so hard to incorporate a little novel in my classes and read aloud and do some audio books with the kids too. Let's hope some grasp on and read and learn... :)

All you say is true, Cindy. We seem to be building a population of worker bees who will simply drone on. Thomas Jefferson would be shaking his head.

Right on! But these days, kids are still learning to read but online and with lots of entertaining games while learning. But I agree with your sonnet that reading is a critical skill. Cute picture!

Books don?t require electonic equipment. The less the effort the smaller the growth. Gee, I sound like an old fuddy duddy.
