This is so sad, but relevant. If you read my latest post In Search Of - you will be surprised by my last stanza. As they say, great minds...I was thinking of all the immigrants who landed in this country and were not considered illegal - because they got here first. Thanks for sharing.

Hi June. But they did not get here. The American Indians were. So we killed fifty million of them by giving them blankets laced with smallpox. It is too bad that in those days every single illegal immigrant should have been killed. Our earth would be in far better shape. Thank you for your lovely review

A very well-written Tanka about the little girl that died because of dehydration in the heat of the dessert. I feel sorry in my heart for the girl but there are many factors to this story that we should look at.

Like what other factors, Sandra? Like the illegal closing of any point they could enter legally. All of those border stations are closed. The migrants run out of water and food and money and then do their only choice which is to cross illegality. The border agents ensure there will be no water in the desert by pouring out the hundreds of bottles of water that were left to save their lives. So, Sandra they can?t enter legally. They are feeling death and hunger. Turning back is not an option. Death waits back home. OK,?so what would do, Sandra? I know Fox does not tell you this. They incorrectly imply that there is a way to come in legally when there is not. Fox also lies about other factors here. Do you know that 80
Percent of them will be deported. That disputes some kind of FOX?s lies. There are no terrorists in the caravan. That is scare mongering the republicans use for every election. In 2010, it was OBAMACARE death panels. Totally untrue and proven to be false. In 2014 it was Ebola. Obamacare was the only world leader to send troops to help. They got Monrovia.ebola free. Another non issue used to fear monger. So, now you may say they should have stayed at home. Some have contracts on their life. A boy is asked to join a gang and he refused. The cartels kill him and his family. That is why they flee. So, what is your solution. Please read reuters, AP, UPI and not just FOX. FOX lies to you.

There are many things that are not right in the world, we have the fear to flee our homes as well in the near future. I can understand that it can happen, I am fully informed about both sides of the political games in the USA, I just decide for myself which side is telling the truth. As I said, we have the same dilemma here, where the government threatens the white people to grab our property without compensation. We start to get pro-active and prepare for the day that this will happen.

We are all entitled to our own opinion, I do respect your opinion, and I just said what I think is the real situation.

The US is breaking the law when they don't offer refugee status, but it seems no one in this corrupt administration cares. Everyone knows immigration needs to be fixed, but this cruelty is not how. The statistics "they" come up with are just outright lies. That's what happens when there's a president who has no clue what he is doing and a lower down Stephen Miller is the de facto president.

Anyway, most touching Pam and we have to stay strong until someone who is capable of telling the truth comes along. It sure isn't the GOP.

I agree. It isn?t the GOP. if they only stood up to trump based on fact. His base might get them out of office but that is a small price to pay for saving the country. Thank you for your wonderful review

Your tanka is searing in its telling the plain truth about the little girl who died needlessly. Her photo is haunting, with the sad and desperate look in her eyes and on her face. I read the news in disbelief that our country could be so cruel. Your Author's notes tell the story well. As you say, no matter what one feels about immigration, this is so heartless and so cruel. Compassion must be the watchword for our nation. Thank you for addressing this abomination. If you touch the heart of one extra person, you have done a service which is so needed.
Take care, Jesse

This is heartbreaking and I feel the same as you on this issue. I heard this on the news and I'm still outraged over those border detention camps they have been housing the kids in. Law and Order SVU had an excellent episode regarding the children at the border a few weeks ago.

It's going to take enough good Americans voting for the people that can change what is happening now. I'm ashamed of what our country is becoming.

Thank you for sharing this powerful piece!

This is a darling child and it's a terrible thing for parents to risk a child's life like that, Pam. They bear the burden for opting to continue to the U.S. when offered asylum in Mexico. The border stations are overwhelmed with thousands of people attempting to enter the United States. That's why they cannot be processed.

Bottom line, we simply cannot take in everyone who wants to come here and if they do, they must come in legally. Each illegal costs the U.S. over $70,000 a year that American taxpayers must support. Congress has to act in unison to fix immigration. The laws are clearly on the books, but not enforced. Marilyn

Hi Marilyn. The border stations that would let them surrender and ask for asylum are all deliberately closed. Mexico is not giving them asylum. Where did you get that?

http://time.com/5462773/mexico-government-asylum-seekers-migrants/ From Time magazine. You have to read balanced news. So these people are fleeing violence and sometimes famine. Their only chance is to come in illegally. Blaming the parents is unconscionable. The border agents who dumped all of the available water in the desert. And the closure of all the border stations. Think about. For the money border patrol spends committing murder by dumping all of the available water in the desert and the expense of the concentration camps housing migrants, we could fix the issues in the Central American countries. Then the migrants have no reason to flee. Thank you for your fine review

I don't want to argue about this. We have differing opinions. Some people want open borders. I don't.

I son?t Want open borders either. But I have compassion for the twenty percent of people who come here and are granted asylum. What would Jesus say?
reply by BeasPeas on 16-Dec-2018
They have to come in legally.
reply by the author on 16-Dec-2018
So don?t cut off all of the ways they can

They apply in their home country before they even leave it just like people around the world are doing it, like my husband's family from Italy and my family from Canada. Legality is the answer and we have to impose the law already on the books that has been ignored by us and consequently we are being taken advantage of. Our fault. We are stupid.
reply by the author on 16-Dec-2018
No Marilyn. Fox lies to you. They have to surrender on US soil to apply for asylum. They get to the border and trump has closed all of the legal ports of entry. So tell me how they can come in legally. It has been made impossible to enter legally.
reply by BeasPeas on 17-Dec-2018
You are correct. You have proved my point. That is exactly why they cannot set foot on U.S. soil in the first place. The country they first step foot on was/is not American soil, it was Mexico. Those people were offered asylum there. They refused--why--because we are the country everyone wants to come to. Every dime we spend to support illegals is a dime taken out of the bank to spend on legit citizens of the U.S. I lived in CA for many years. No one will be able to live in any of the coastal states except the very wealthy or the very poor because they are taxing their residents to death. But those states have created the problem for themselves. Anyone who can get out of there, does.

You will not change my mind and I won't change yours. But I will tell you this, if we don't get a handle on our border and/or immigration, those favoring open borders will rue the day they were for it.

All anyone asks--a very easy thing to do--just apply and come here legally. Don't insult your host country by demanding what isn't yours--at least not yet.

As I said before, I am not for open borders. Mexico is not offering asylum. Just holding stations. That is better than it was. But it is the worst part of Mexico. Still friends

Of course, still friends. It's OK to disagree. Makes the world go around.

Knowing that this poem is based on fact makes me sick too.
You have made effective use of very syllable to tell her story.
The border problem is gigantic and unsolved.

What a really sad story so bluntly told in this tanka that pulls no punches. This whole immigrant syndrome, wherever it is found is becoming ridiculous. It is the problem of our age and we need to solve it. This won't happen through enforced deportation or by building walls.

Exactly Jim. So many white people are afraid of becoming a minority with all of these black, Brown, red and yellow people. Still a plurality mind you but not the majority. Makes me sick. Thank you for your lovely review

indeed losing a life because no water is appalling! Mariah Carey once said that she envies starving children because they are so thin. an understatement of stupidity, ignorance and the way the world works. greed has become a virtue and social Darwinism is on high record.
