Yes, it is sad that the brilliance of Maurits Escher was not recognized by the art world for so long, despite the public's much earlier fascination with his highly detailed work full of optical illusion. Every one of his works is a masterpiece of its own, prompting extended viewing. Perhaps other artists were envious because they all knew they could not even approach his unique vision and skill.

Decades ago I bought a book that contains prints of all of Escher's works. I never tire of looking at all those remarkable images. I like your term -- "cerebration art" -- for his beautiful, photographically realistic scenes that elicit deep thought. Superb, and aptly illustrated with "Relativity" -- one of his Escher's most famous works.

Wow, Mike! Thanx so much for those awesome stars and especially for the detailed review that you took time to write -- I do so appreciate your input and comments! :) This was a fun little writing prompt...these quick challenge 5-7-5's always give the brain a good "detachment without stress" after a long day. :) :) Of course, Escher will always be my go to when asked who is my favorite artist -- glad to see there's another fan out there that can never ever tire of looking at his works! :) Thanx for stopping by -- I hope to be more engaged during at least part of the holidays! :) ) Take care! :) Yvette

You are most welcome, Yvette. M. C. Escher ought to have received a lot more credit for his brilliance than he did during his lifetime, but that is true for many artists now revered whose works bring millions at auction today.

One notable exception is Picasso, who originally, like his father, painted with near photographic detail -- but his works sold poorly. When he began painting what he personally considered nonsense, though, he laughed all the way to the bank at the fools who gladly paid high prices for it. Given the price inflation for those paintings, the original buyers did invest well, even though that was not their intent, which was to seem avant garde.

It is interesting that the Catholic Church does not own ANY abstract art, as interest in it is ephemeral and it won't hold its value long-term, as only representative art can.

I think Escher's work will long remain of interest because of its photo-realistic images of recognizable objects in unique arrangement. -- Mike

Thank you so much for doing a post on Escher. I love his work! I was turned onto his book of artwork in 1972. I did not know that was the year he died. "Mind Blown" is right! I read your author's notes and felt sad that he was not appreciated, as he should have been, until the twenty-first century. The group I hung out with, back in 1972, all loved his artwork. Your poem is wonderfully written, and I agree, his work "flouts reality." Your piece speaks of cerebration art. I understand the word without reading it before. Escher was definitely cerebral, and bent reality, in a way no one has done before, or since, (to my recollection). Thank you for this tribute to an excellent artist. I can only hope that this piece exposes more folks to his wonderful work.
Take care, Jesse

I had to read your poem once I saw the picture, since I have always enjoyed Escher's Work but have not seen it for awhile. Thank you for sharing your research and his "Relativity" lithograph. I did not know he only found aclaim in old age. I admired your succinct 5-7-5 and your use of "flouts". Cheers and best wishes in the contest- Joan

I do love Escher's art. I like that you chose the subject of his art to feature in your poem. The point you make in your poem is so true. We deceive ourselves into thinking that we can figure out the puzzle. Some even think sketching out the stairway will help them figure out the mind trick secret. And yet most never will. But some will not give up easily. It can all be a great metaphor. Well expressed.

this is worth 6six6 stars ++. "flouts reality" is excellent. I was going to do Escher myself. I'm glad I didn't, it wouldn't get close to this masterpiece. good luck in the contest, you have my vote X2..

This is very good. Like many artists, Escher wasn't appreciated in his prime. Fortunately, before his death, people recognized the genius of his work.

An excellent 5-7-5 poem on one on my favorite and one of the most interesting artists
Complex realities, seemingly impossible realities
topological spaces, it's all relative
Your poems match quite well
Good luck in the contest

Your fine piece makes effective use of every syllable to pinpoint
the most memorable trait of this artist's work. Sometimes we like
to see subjects in a painting defying gravity!

I wondered why someone did not make a painting of the paradox drawings that used to circulate...apparently Escher did so. Excellent five/seven/five and artwork.
