Is this the opening verse in your book Tony. I love this, particularly the last two lines. Says it all. Writings for the generations to follow you, and I'm sure they'll be treasured.
cheers,

Many thanks for your review, Valda, and for your award of six stars. No, this one isn't in the book. It has taken about eight months from submission of draft to final publication, so all of the poems in the new book were written in 2017 or earlier. Best wishes, Tony

I'm so excited for you. I'd grant a sixer if I had one, dear. It's totally worth it...
Your words flow rich with energy and vibrant imagery. The retrospection so plentiful will no doubt edify all within it's visual expanse... Tankas can be difficult to pull off, however, yours flows so smoothly and conveys a very succinct thought with spot on syllabic count. Excellent work, dear. Congrats on the new book, also :0)

Well, Tony, I fully intend to bookcase this beautiful tanka and your incredibly helpful notes because this is one format that is so much more demanding than is often written--I was lucky enough to have another extremely talented writer give me tips (mountainwriter), yet I still find it a form that challenges me. YOUR tanka is everything I aspire to, and so a marvelous example to follow. Thank you for sharing this sublime poem!

Many thanks for your lovely review, Dawn, and for the sixth star. I took both of Ray's Blank Verse courses, but unfortunately did not manage the one on Tankas. He was a fine teacher. The notes I have appended were his guidelines. I'm always hesitant to write Japanese short forms, and am delighted that this one worked so well for you. Best wishes, Tony

Masterful rendition of the 'Tanka" here. Indeed so well matched to picture as well. I like the way there is no punctuation but I understand that is in the manner of this poem. Terrific!

I enjoyed reading your poem. I plan on purchasing your book of poems. I am doing this from bed. I hope to do it while I'm on Christmas break when I have more time. I hope that's okay.

Hello Tony,
Congratulations on the new book and the fine Tanka!
both will provide nourishment for many years.
Wonderful imagery as the tawny leaves fall like words
that form into poems of autumn's splendour.
Perhaps, you could have Charles stumble upon Brindled Words
in an out of the way bookstore in Paris and comment.
Hmmm, this looks like an interesting volume
and published by Ginninderra Press, no less.
Well done
No sixes left

Thanks for your kind words and congratulations, Robert. Perhaps Charles will make his fortune if he finds one of those rare first editions that has the author's name misspelled on the front cover!

-Congratulations on the publication
of this book of poetry, Tony.
-I like the cover and title.
-Thanks for sharing about
the book in your notes.
-I like your tanka for the
book announcement.
-I like the description in the
first two lines, with color imagery.
-A good pivot line.
-The ending is good, as well,
although I don't know about
"an old man's pen!"
-Good luck with the book.

Thanks, Pam, for your congratulations on the book and your comments about the poem. I'd be delighted to send you a complimentary copy of Brindled Words if you are interested - as a small 'thank you' for your help with the novel. All the best to you both, Tony

You are very welcome, Tony, and thank you so much for thinking of me with the book. We are in the process of getting one, and then can write a review on Amazon. We are looking forward to the book. I must say, it came as a surprise. I thought I was going to be reading another chapter, and there was a poem, and then a new book! I guess Helen and Charles are enjoying their vacation!

This is wonderful. I love the flow. I understand this to mean that poems written from a older man who wanted to write and is just now being born a writer. Well done. Keep writing.

Is that a book cover? Ah, yes, I found it online before I read your notes! Query on the spelling of your name - Anthony with an H on the cover, but several times without the H in your notes... Ginninderra sounds interesting.
Thanks for the notes on Tanka too. Perhaps you could submit them to Tom with a request to put them in place of the ones they currently use for Tanka. I know he's receptive to the idea - I was going to re-write the whole lot once!
To your poem...
The words themselves are lush in your first lines - sere/verdancy and your pivot line works perfectly - even with a little hint of 'splendour falls on castle walls...'
Then your poem takes a sharp turn to deliver the emotive impact you mention in the notes. Now it's not just an observation of autumn any more, but is powerfully linked to your own life. 'unborn years' is lovely as well.
This is the complete package. If it doesn't win, I'll be gob-smacked. And now I'd better go and re-write my tanka - the one I have clearly isn't going to be good enough.

Very many thanks for your detailed and supportive comments, Steve, and for the six star award. I guess that you are going to be gob-smacked, as I didn't enter this one in the contest. I've just read your tanka. First class! The notes were originally Ray Giffin's (mountainwriter49). I cribbed them from the bottom of one of Jim's tankas and have now credited them properly. I'll have a look at Poetry Dances and make a recommendation to Tom.
Thanks for pointing out the misspelling. I must have read the final proofs of the book half a dozen times before signing off on them - and never noticed the misspelling of my own name on the title page. You'd think that would have stood out like the proverbial dog's balls. The publisher has agreed to make the necessary correction, which is a relatively simple matter as the books are 'print-on-demand'.
