Great poem. Your diction is extraordinary; I had to re-read the poem a few times because while it is short it conveys a profound meaning. Thank you for sharing and for teaching me about the Tanka poetic structure.

Beautiful colours and images, words of reflection... The last line is unexpected and full of promise. This poem is a spiritually-healthy "whole".

Very well done Tanka. The dry leaves and no more green mean autumn has fallen. In turn autumn meaning older in years, but not winter yet, so poems still provide food for the soul. The more I think about it, the more I realize just how much you crammed into that short space. I went back and changed my Stars to a Six. This poem is absolutely awesome. Did you realize what you were writing? Excellent job.

Thank you, Jaye, for this lovely review and your affirming words. I very much appreciate your close reading and the sixth star. I am diffident about attempting these Japanese short forms and am encouraged by your comments. You have unraveled the sense of what I was trying to convey!

You always wax lyrical. It's fantastic what you do to words . Lush verdancy....sere the blood red leaves. I love your novel but I must say your poems are so elegant...
Well penned ..thanks for nourishing us readers...sublime thought...or at least food for thought lol
Hugs
God bless

Thank you so much for this lovely review, Jenny, and for the six stars. I must say that I am much more comfortable expressing myself through poetry, but having now got half way through the novel, I'm determined to finish it. just to prove to myself that I can. All the best, Tony

How utterly beautiful, it sweeps one away into serenity and joy at the same time.
You are master at words and combining artwork to enhance your poetry. I shall read whatever I find that you have written. Thank you for this glory in my day,

Hello Tony!
Congratulations on your newest publication. Very exciting!
And your tanka is stellar. I especially appreciate the last two lines:
poems from an old man's pen
nourishment for unborn years

While I would argue against the "old man" reference, however, I surely embrace the "nourishment for unborn years." Beautiful...

Thank you so much for this lovely review, Dianne, and for your kind words. You are right - old age is a matter of perspective! I still have enough puff to blow out seventy-five candles on my cake next week!

I enjoyed reading your poem. The author's notes are quite exhaustive and in depth which helped a lot in understanding the message the author is driving at. The explanation is clear and vivid. Thanks for sharing.

Wow! Congratulations on your newest publication, Tony. It's so awesome.
I enjoyed your tanka very much...especially the imagery of autumn as you tie it to the emotional response for the reader of the old man leaving his poetry as food for life of the young. Best wishes in the contest, and congrats again!
Smiles,
Karyn :-)

Many thanks for this lovely review, Karyn, and for the sixth star. I decided not to enter this into the contest, as there was personal identification in the author notes. Glad you liked it. I seldom try these Japanese short forms. All the best, Tony

That sure is a well done book cover. It sets up a peaceful yet active thought process immediately.

Congratulations to you on another book and a beautiful tanka too.

I like this poem because it is a different kind of writing. This is how a poem should look like. It sometimes has to be strange in writing. Thanks for sharing this! Good luck in the contest!
