I loved this! It give real insight into what makes a man of character. That extra something that pushes them to do the right thing when others are content to wait. Great job!

Very well done. The picture with it is just right. The piece kept my interest. I could see Mr. Lincoln trudging along. I wish you well in the contest. You have a way with words, for sure.

I really enjoyed writing this story about Lincoln. Some elements were fiction (e.g.--the blizzard Christmas Eve), but the rest was all factual. Thank you for sharing, Kate, and your kind praise. Rod

I never knew that Abe Lincold was ever a postmaster! What an amazing man. I wondered if putting the letters in his hat would be a good idea when walking in a blizzard. Wouldn't a pocket be better? Great storytelling.
One suggestion:
"At first he " (At first, he)

This is a nice story of what Abe may have done and from past behavior probably would do. I like the way you've described him, his humbleness and willingness to help. Congratulations on winning the contest. Marilyn

I am not sure what I think of his performance as president, and his obsession with retaining his power and the cotton money, and letting men rot in Andersonville when the south was ready to exchange prisoners and had nothing to feed their own soldiers, much less prisoners...many anecdotes make me think he was a good guy ruined by politics...power corrupting...well written(of course, the winner)

? A good guy ruined by politics? is a great way of describing him, especially in the last months of the Civil War. I am so pleased you took the time to read ?Just Doing His Job? and truly appreciate your kind praise. Rod

Very nice entry for the contest. You were able to tell a heartwarming story of consideration and strength in very few words . Good use of imagery portraying the storms effect on old Abe. Good luck in the contest.

Great story! I enjoyed the dialogue... I enjoyed the description of his walking through the snow and his large hands, and the disappearing footprints... love that this fictional story is based on facts about a real person... nicely done!

I don't know of a president that had more stories, more rumors and more sayings attributed to him than Abraham Lincoln. My favorite is, " A person is about as happy as they decide to be". Good story and good luck in the contest.

Dear Mystery Writer,

This was a surprise. I did not realize that Abe had ever owned a store - that part was really interesting to me. Learned something new!

But, I wasn't at all surprised to hear that he would do something generous and kind like this. nice story. Good luck!

What a great story, and there are so many wonderful Lincoln stories. I've been reading some mystery series about him. This sounds like something Abe Lincoln would do--go out in a blizzard to deliver special letters on Christmas Eve. It was a good thing he knew his way around, as the blizzard made it impossible to see. Great story, and you did a wonderful job telling it. Best of luck in the Flash Fiction contest. judi
