Ancient light ... so true.
Your notes are quite 'illuminating'. (lol) We never really think about these wonders of the universe.

Your 5-7-5 has fine 's' assonance and 'ar' internal rhyme or is that also assonance? haha
Good luck in the contest.

Lol, I sometimes look at the sky and don't think about how far away they are, but once your mind strays down that path...you realize how much we do not understand.

I've always found those facts fascinating, and your poem expressed it well. Fine form and presentation. I've also wondered if sound travels out into the galaxies...all those musical notes floating around would be cool! Ha ha ha.

Distant stars sparkle -
midnight sky illumined by
beams of ancient light

Superb medley of S and L and M sounds makes this great to read aloud. Excellent word economy. Excellent imagery. Enjoyed this!

Recently I marveled at how huge the stars appeared up in northern California, way north of San Francisco. It's strange to think about how very far away they are, and in some cases by the time you see the light the stars may not exist anymore. Then if you think about how huge the universe is - infinite in fact, it's amazing and almost impossible to really understand. I love it!

Sound doesn't travel in space because it needs molecules to transmit the vibration. But it turns out there's ancient dust left from old stars that can transmit very low frequency sound - our ears could not hear it. I don't know why, but that gives me such a happy feeling. I'm an odd duck, lol.

    hugs,

Yes, that's always such a marvel, isn't it. We can see stars - or at least their light long after they have already ceased to exist. A nice contemplative 5-7-5, Carol!

This is a fascinating little piece about a very big subject. Yes, I have pondered on the fact that the lights in the sky we call stars are actually what they looked like in the past. However recent or long ago it may be. The stars and the celestial bodies of our solar system are awe inspiring when you think about them. I remember watching a movie once where the characters had to gallop at full stretch across the floor of a canyon to be at a certain point when the sun touched it. The shadows of the cliffs and crags moved so swiftly, it made me realise just how fast the sun moves in its passage across the sky. We think of the sun as being a slow ,majestic object rolling slowly from horizon to horizon, but we don't have any concept of the speed at which it travels. Well, I didn't until I saw that movie, and it was a revelation to me. Anyway, great little poem, Well done cheers Cass

Thanks, Cass, there is so much to contemplate in our world and beyond! I love that the sun orbits the center of the Milky Way, we don't often think about that...
Thanks so much for reading :))

very nice, Carol. I like anything to do with outer space or the heavens. Your poem speaks to that in a natural-flowing voice. I am always fascinated with the stars. Thanks for sharing, my friend. Bob

It's fascinating to see these wonderful photos of the heavens. We never tire of looking at them. At least I don't. Your nice poem is well composed and described. Good luck in the contest. Author's note is a good accompaniment to your entry.

Hi Carol, this is a beautiful 5-7-5 poem and one of the best if not the best I've read so far. Oh yeah, the starlit night with the ancient stars fascinates me as well. Good luck in the contest. Warm regards. Ulla:)))
