I would only smile if I heard that steel traps were outlawed everywhere. The farms produce much better furs, but I will never wear a fur garment. Too much cotton in the world. Thanks for reading and reviewing my poetic rant.

I, for one, Red, would welcome the return of the Injun.
Not perfect, they, but, in my mind, preferable to worshipers of gasoline and lotto jackpots.
I've lost several cats. Some friends. Some mere acquaintances. But leg-hold traps or intentional poisonings or reckless pollution, they all deserved better.
Peace, Lee

Yep, the aborigines could have existed here forever, along with the bison and passenger pigeon. I fear we are going to have to rethink or go extinct. Thanks for reading my poem about something that has rankled a little for years...

We get to the point, Red, when all those 'little rankles' boil to the surface. We rant a bit. Then we're labeled Coots, Geezers, and worse. I'm a proud Coot.

Your poem is well written but so sad, Red. Good job with the rhymes and smooth flow of lines. I was saddened that anyone could treat a little kitty like that person did. Sorry for your loss. I know the kitty felt loved by you and you missed him. What a hateful thing to do to the little kitty. You are most entitled to your rant. As for that person--God knows. Thanks for sharing. Jan

In those days there four houses along this stretch of road, and no side roads...now there are a dozen houses and five side roads. I loved the country scene, but then we had poachers and trappers...you can't win dealing with people...that's why the nice ones are so valuable...thanks for reading my cat rant...

How awful! I hope there's a special place in Hell for people like that. That was a heart-breaking experience. You've told this sad story so well in your usual good rhyme and meter. What a cute name for your cat.

In the early days of Mighty Mouse, the heavy was Oil Can Harry. I stole the name when the cat got dunked in used motor oil.
He lived about as long as outside farm cats did in those years, maybe three or four years...no vets here in those days...thanks for reading my rant against trapping...it's so unnecessary.

I agree. I once made my mother's neighbor mad. He trapped animals for their furs and made belts and things. He said he shot them in the traps, and I said that's kind of like shooting fish in a barrel, isn't it? He never liked me, but I didn't care.

A very well-written poem. It must be heartbreaking to find your pet so brutally slaughtered and skinned by some evil person who have not heart at all. Trucks on the road means something good is happening economically.

We are in a building boom again, and the open land for hunting and trapping is vanishing fast. I don't grieve for that, but the hills are scarred and ugly with houses and roads cutting them up...can't have everything, I guess. Thanks for reading my rant in rhymes.

Gee Red, I'm sickened by this, but do, honestly, know this pain. And for me, it never eases if I even allow one shred of any memories filter into my day/night. We've lost so many pets and even horses to outside influence. You should go to my portfolio if you want and read about my horse Rusty. Damn it, I get so tired of arrogant you know what's who believe they have the right to do whatever they please. I guard my current pets like a banshee and still, can't keep them from certain ... errrrrrgh! I'm so sorry about this poor little fella...

My dad always warned me not to get attached to calves and pigs, to make pets of dogs and cats, but in those days, the outside farm animals had a short lifespan. No vets, etc. Harry was three or four, young by today's standards...that really ticked me off. Thanks for reading my rant, a half-century later...

And I got to rattling keys and forgot to say thanks
especially for the six!

Hi Red. I will not let my cats go outside. Too many dangers out there. My only cat now was thrown in the trash the day he was born still with full umbilical cord. His tail is crooked because the trash can lid was slammed on it. I am really sorry about your cat. I had two poisoned, one get run over, and one get AIDS. He also got shot with a B.B. gun within an eighth inch of his spine and was hit by a car which broke his tail. It does not matter as much the how, having a pet suffer a painful death is stressful. I think trapping should be illegal. I'm with you. Man does not deserve nature. Thank you for sharing

I lost dog after dog to traffic and finally built a lot, using up five hundred-foot rolls of dog wire. My cats can hop over it at will, but they seldom do...they are all about fourteen or fifteen...bound to start losing them someday soon. Sure dread it. Thanks for reading my rant about traps.

I am sorry. They have really good deodorizers now. It actually smells good near the cat box. They have towers which can be set to spray every nine, 18, 36 and 60 seconds. Box is not that hard to clean out every day. We have ours in a spare closet. Clumping litter. Then just scoop everything out. An idea for your next cat, maybe

It is a sad ending indeed for the animals we love and cherish. People keep building and shoving our wildlife into towns and etc in order to eat and then wan to kill them.

Isaac Asimov wrote that if the population growth does not slow, in a few decades there will be no room on the planet for anything but man and house chickens...Hope he is wrong, but he has a good record of being right...thanks for reading my rant about a cat dead some fifty years now...

I'd save for him a good warm seat Below. ...with some metal claw traps and landmines along the path to the warm seat. You're right, Native Americans have a respect for nature. I'm sorry for your horrible loss, something like that does not go unforgotten, ever. You must have been quite young then, even I was...lol This is a harsh message, which hopefully, the reader will take to heart. This is clearly a universal cautionary tale. Thank you.

I waited quite a while to rant about steel traps....like fifty years...this was before the law was changed to make a crime of not checking traps daily and carrying a device to release domestic animals...still hate traps. Thanks much for reading and reviewing.

This is a heckuva great poem, Ellijay. I can feel your fury and I feel the same way. Why people treat little critters with such cruelty is beyond me.
Poor little guy must've been terrified in his last minutes.
This has grit, real life and it's a fine poem.
Thank you for sharing.

There are too many synthetics that smell better and last longer than furs. If they outlaw trapping everywhere, I'll just grin...why did I wait fifty years to tell Harry's story? I guess it nettled me more than I admitted...thanks for reading and reviewing.
