Hi Steve, I have to give this a six as it's so well written and it did indeed bring tears to my eyes. Although I was brought up in Europe it turned out that I'm half American. I have an American brother, nephews and a niece. I'm close to them. And I'm appalled what is going on to a country I've always felt close to. Being brought up in Europe and therefore a product of the ancient and recent history, I can only be horrified about what is taking place. I hope the population will have enough sense to reverse things. It's yet to be seen. All the best. Ulla:)))

Ulla, thanks for the kind words and the thoughtful response. Like you, I am dismayed by events in America since Trump took office. Let's hope this election reduces his ability to cause further harm.

This is a very passionate piece of writing that I could see being delivered as a speech. I especially liked the lines, "The shocking is now so common that it has lost its power to shock; the ever-repeated lies destroy your capacity to understand truth". They embody so much of how our society has twisted since in the years of Trump. Very well-written and important messages in here. Nice work,
Julie

Thanks, Julie. Yes, there are some speech-like elements here. Unfortunately, I have never been much of a public speaker, so I have to write!

This is an excellent, well thought out letter, Steve. I can't comment on how the American people feel about Trump, all we can do is sit back and watch. It seems to be quite divided in FS too, as I've read many people write in support of him, as well as those that appose him. It will be interesting to see the outcome. Whatever happens, it will surely effect us in the rest of the world. Well done, I enjoyed your impassioned letter. :) Sandra xxx

Sandra, thanks for the kind words. Yes, there is great division - that is both the worry and the wonder. I fail to see how any right-thinking person can possibly support this ignorant and mean-spirited man.

Steve -

What a powerful reminder of the deep roots of the American character. While we tend to think
of independence as our overriding trait - time and time again we have proven (as a country)
that we can rise above our inherent differences and come together guided by our better angels.

On a technical level, this is superb essay writing...and compelling reasoning.

Currently, this "grand experiment" is racked by divisiveness and animus. Unfortunately, we
have been here before (a nation divided) and the results were catastrophic, leaving 2-2.5%
of the American population (620,000 - 750,000 citizens) to be mourned.

For two years marches, letters, e-mails, organized opposition, impassioned writing and
denunciation of lies and misdirection have proliferated...but tomorrow (Nov 6th) America's
most powerful form of the true check on government corruption will speak.

Like you, I too pray America (at least those of us who care enough to fight for our country) will
do the right thing.

Thanks so much for the thoughtful response and the gift of stars

Is it going too far to think that this could lead to a civil war? That same thought occurred to me today. What a catastrophe it would be.

Yes, I know I suggested the opposition has not been strong enough, vociferous enough. I do know there has been protest since Day 1 of this presidency. What confounds me is that there seems to be an equal number of supporters blind to Trump's real character.

There are many on this site who share our views .s star. Let's
see who comes out of the woodwork for this post. There are just as many who are star-struck by this every.-day TV reality actor/

Great writing in a soft tone that is conducive to reflection.
You know my views so I won't repeat/

Thanks, Ingrid, for the kind words and the six stars.

Only a couple of 'not happy' reviews. I think I now have the full range from one star up to six! I am assuming there will have been many more who chose not to review at all.

Let's see what this election brings.

I wish more Americans possessed your perspective, Steve. We need an eloquent historian to lead the charge here, but none have stood up, or stood out, yet. Yet.

While I agree with you, I feel a niggling need to defend myself and my country-folk. The last two years have seemed like twenty--but they aren't. Few of us expected Trump to win the presidency--even his supporters.

Movements take time to foment, congeal, organize. Our Civil Rights Movement and Vietnam opposition didn't reach critical mass overnight. These things happen in fits and starts.

Those of us who abhor most of what Trump stands for are still reeling from his election. That so many US citizens bought into his crap has me stunned. Stunned people need to regroup. I thought Trump would implode by now. One asshole move after another. One cheap shot after another. Yet he slithers on. I'm continuously stunned. Literally, punch drunk.

Then there's the Mueller investigation. I had (have) faith enough dirt would come out for a quick impeachment. I think this believe has contributed to a wait-and-see attitude among Trump's detractors.

Two years is a wink between ice ages, Steve. I'm impatient, too, but this country is nearly evenly divided on the Trump issue. Equal opposing forces generate little movement.

Tuesday's elections may or may not tip the scales. If the country rebukes Trump in any small way, perhaps we'll regain our footing. Maybe then, there will be movement.

We haven't lost our America, Steve, just our bearings. I trust it's a temporary loss.

Peace, Lee

Lee, thanks for the thoughtful words and the generous stars.

Like you, I can't believe how much support the man has. What that says about the current state of society is a genuine worry, especially when compounded with other countries also lurching towards the right.

Interesting days ahead, whichever way it goes tomorrow.

The irony is, nationalism has gone global.

The immigration/refugee issue ought to be treated as a humanitarian crises, not as invasions. We should be at war the problems, not those who suffer the consequences. Where is the outrage from the United Nations? Where is the condemnation from the Vatican?

Refugees around the world should be, can be, readily absorbed. What's 7,000 more people at a table that already seats 250 million?

    Let's be human, folks.

I hope your reviews reflect our universal humanity, Steve.

I shall leave it to the Americans on site to take issue on the politics, as I am sure some will. I'm awarding six stars for the eloquence of this impassioned plea, the coherence of your arguments, your appropriate use of historical precedents and your fine sense of oratory. Your case is presented so well that I find it impossible to mount any effective counter-argument. One can only hope that sanity will eventually prevail over mass hysteria.

Tony, thanks for the very kind words and the six stars. I've never been an orator, but I can imagine this as a speech!

Normal transmission resuming would be nice. I hope it comes before too much further damage is caused.

Not too many arguments about the politics - I assume most of the opposition simply abstained.

This is a heartfelt plea from an American in the thick of the campaign and I enjoyed hearing your thoughts here. As an outsider I cannot begin to know all the details but I enjoyed your opinion and time will tell as to how the people will vote and the feeling of the nation on all the stand points Trump has stood for, it is now up to the people, good luck, love Dolly x

Thanks, Dolly. I am not an American and have never even visited the country so I am sure some will see this as extremely presumptuous. I just felt I needed to say something - I am really concerned about the direction Trump is taking and all of the good, decent people seem unable to do anything about it.
